18th Annual Write and Illustrate Your Own Book winners announced

    A celebration for the winners of the 18th Annual Write and Illustrate Your Own Book sponsored by American Association of University Women (AAUW), Susquehanna Valley Branch was held at the Kelly Elementary School in Lewisburg, Thursday evening, April 24, 2008. Six students from each grade level were recognized for their achievement.
    Third grade winning stories were written and illustrated by Breonna Catherman, Mifflinburg Elementary; Jonathan Hayes, Samantha Orren and McKenzie Snyder, New Berlin Elementary School; Wilson Fisher, Kelly Elementary School; Jacob Eichenlaub, Home-Schooled  
    Fourth grade winning stories were written and illustrated by Hayley Beck, Sydney McGlaughlin, Hollis Jacoby and Steven Hook, Mifflinburg Intermediate School; Quinn Cummings and Sydney Hartzell, Linntown Intermediate School
    Over 180 illustrated stories from third and fourth grade school student in the Lewisburg Area and  Mifflinburg Area School Districts plus two from Union County students who are home schooled or attending other schools were submitted through the Public Library of Union County. AAUW members and residents of the community evaluated the entries. Stories were judge on content and illustrations; each entry was read and judged independently at least twice. Winners of the top three prizes in each grade level had their books bound and placed in public library as well as his/her home school library; honorable mention books are bound for the home school library. During the week April 28th, the books can be seen in the window of Page after Page, in Lewisburg.
    The committee, Diane Meixell, Pamela Mauger, Nada Gray, and Jane Williams congratulate the students, school librarians and teachers. The response to the project indicates it is a well-received project to engage students in reading and writing. The stories and illustrations were delightful. Students for their entries, along with teachers and librarians deserve special thanks for the fine entries that challenged the people who evaluated the entries.
