“It was a major credit to our supporters to make this amount,” Pennsylvania Cystic Fibrosis, Inc. (PACFI) President Betty Hollenbach said in noting the the 21st Annual Mike & Dot’s II/Budweiser Chili Cookoff & Auction raised $14,500 for the organization. “We’re also grateful to E.H. Kleckner’s/Budweiser for their $1,000 donation and their sponsorship of the event.”
The event kicked off with Bethany “Buffy” Umholtz singing while New Jersey chainsaw artist Brian “Ackmonster” Ackley was outside forming his creations that later went up for bid. Ackley’s Nittany Lion, Pittsburgh Steeler logo chairs, and special “Cure CF” ribbon were sold for over $900.
Other high bid items were a one-week stay in an Ocean City, MD, condo that went for $1450; a summer party package sold for $700; a tree stand sport blind hit $630; and a Brad Shoemaker painting made especially for the event sold for $440.
Artist Jody Fallon created a “No More Roses” oil painting consisting of 65 roses that sold for $400. Years ago, a young boy who had cystic fibrosis asked his mother about his “65 roses” because it was his way of pronouncing cystic fibrosis. Ever since, “65 roses” has been the symbol of all CF organizations.
The event also raised almost $1,300 for the Ashley’s Angels Transplant Fund that included a $1,000 donation from Bea and Elmer Smith of Mifflinburg.
Over 40 chili chefs competed for awards and the winners in the ‘Other’ category were Jesse Swanger, first place; Sandy Shaffer, second; Charity Bowersox, third; Adam Umbel and Corey Emery, fourth; and Honorable Mentions Darla Schell and the team of April Merrill and Susan Showers. In the ‘Hot’ category, first place went to Adam Umbel and Corey Emery; Terrelle Walls and Roxie, second; Wild Bill, third; Troy Bowersox, fourth; and Honorable Mentions to Rod Shetterly and Greg Martin.
