Morning commutes took unprecedented and thrilling turns down country lanes and borough streets today for a few little fundraisers at Mifflinburg Elementary School: kindergartener Alexander Reed, first grader Lexi Stover, second grader Denise Seebold and third grader Kali Shuck all experienced limo rides— with their parents and breakfast— to school last Friday morning.
They received a “red carpet” reception at the entrance, with school administrators— including Superintendent Dr. Barry Tomasetti— as well as teachers, students and parent’s association members to greet and congratulate them.
This “Elementary excitement” was in recognition of these students having raised the most money per their grade level as a part of the Home and School’s Association (HSA) one annual fundraiser a year, called the “Spell-A-Thon.”
Mifflinburg Elementary’s “Spell-A-Thon” is the primary source of budgetary funding for special programming, projects, and supply funds, as provided by the HSA, for the school’s 450+ students; all monies raised directly support kindergarten through third grade. But instead of asking the schoolchildren to sell potentially unwanted gift items or food, this fundraiser offers an educational focus:  as a “Spell-A-thon,” children receive pledges for spelling words correctly on a special test, commensurate with grade level and ability. Donors may either make a flat donation, or pledge per word.
Over $18,500 was raised thanks to the tremendous generosity of students’ families and friends. Never before has this much monetary support been realized at this school in one year. The HSA Officers and Fundraising Committee publicly acknowledged all who assisted in this worthy endeavor at their regular meeting this week, including Executive Car and Limousine Service of Lewisburg, who considerately donated the car and driver for today’s special highlight. The HSA also shared this success would not have been possible without the support of teachers and staff as well as the special encouragement of Head Teacher Paul Reeder.
At special assemblies planned for this afternoon, every student in the school who got at least one sponsor will receive food coupons, as kindly donated by the Mifflinburg McDonalds. Students who achieved 100% on their tests will be presented with a very special certificate of participation from the HSA. In addition to individual accomplishments, four classes, one per grade level, brought in extraordinary fundraising results:  Mrs. Defacis’, Mrs. Zimmermans’, Mrs. Dreeses’ and Mrs. Enders’.  These classes will enjoy pizza parties in their honor, compliments of the HSA, at a date to be determined later. As a special gift, the Scarlet D donated two $25 gift certificates for two teachers of the top fundraising classes; the HSA purchased the other two $25. gift certificates, so the four teachers per grade level with the top fundraising results received this special recognition.
On a final – and fun – note, the absolute top fundraising class in the school this year:  Mrs. Defacis’ Kindergarteners, will have the honor of choosing one of two celebratory rewards graciously offered by Principal Leo Weidner:  Mr. Weidner will act as a “waiter” to their classes’ pizza party, or they will get to be “Assistant Principals” for a day, complete with clipboards, checklists and a special “meeting” with the Principal.
The Mifflinburg Elementary HSA congratulates – and sincerely thanks – everyone involved! They would also like tot  hank the Mifflinburg Police Department who provided a lights flashing two vehicle escort of the limo at the entrance of the school.
