Evangelical Community Hospital’s Community Health Education department is offering appointments for CarFit, a program designed to give a quick but comprehensive check of how well a person and their vehicle work together. To schedule an appointment, call Community Health Education at 570-522-2693.
A trained professional will ask simple questions and complete a 12-point CarFit checklist with the driver and their vehicle. CarFit aims to reduce senior crashes and the death and injuries that may result, by reviewing safety belt use, the tilt of the steering wheel and settings of the head restraint, and positioning of the airbag, gas and brake pedals. CarFit specialists also review the line of sight over the steering wheel, mirror adjustments and neck mobility, as well as the operation of the parking brake, ignition key and other vehicle controls.
The entire process takes about 15 minutes, and the person leaves with recommended car adjustments and adaptations, a list of resources in their area and greater peace of mind.
Studies suggest that many older adults outlive their driving ability by eight to ten years. Older adults are as aware of this possibility as their family members are. Most could improve their safety on the road, and extend their time behind the wheel, by making small but effective changes to their driving habits as well as their vehicles.
