Four local Boy Scout leaders recently attended training by the National Advancement Team of the Boy Scouts of America.  Training was held in the Florida Keys onsite of the BSA High Adventure location known as Florida Sea base.  Youth participate in weeklong adventures aboard ship or put their outdoor skills to use on “Big Munson” island not too far from Key West.  Youth enjoy scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, and fishing the awesome coral reefs of the Florida Keys.  Florida Sea Base provides an incredible opportunity for youth to explore the diverse wildlife of the reef ecosystem.  Yes we do this in the Boy Scouts.
The week-long training was conducted for Scout Leaders involved in Advancement.  This includes all rank advancement in scouting as well as the Merit Badge program.  Many topics were trained including rank advancement for special needs boys.  There is no age limit for special needs boys to continue to work toward Eagle Scout.  Our local Leaders were trained on the brand new “Guide to Advancement” as well as the new Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook.  This workbook is designed to provide guidance and consistency for boys progressing on to the rank of Eagle Scout.  We have 50-60 young men earn Eagle each year in our Council.
Our goal is not to make every boy an Eagle Scout but rather carry out the 3 aims of scouting – 1. Develop Character, 2. Develop Mental and Physical Fitness and 3.  Build Citizenship in each boy, said Malick who is a member of the District Advancement Team.

Conrad, District Vice Chair of Program, thought the training was extremely beneficial especially being able to get to know the BSA National Advancement Team members.
The best legacy we can leave is making a difference in the youth of our communities, one boy at a time, said Duke – member of the District Advancement Team.
“Dad” Wiand, who oversees advancement for the new Seven Bridges District of Snyder, Union, and Northumberland counties, has been involved in scouting since 1928.  Wiand celebrated his 94th Birthday during the training at Florida Sea Base and there is no one with a bigger heart for scouting.  Happy Birthday Herb!
These leaders also hold various leadership roles in Boy Scout Troops in Northumberland, Sunbury and Mifflinburg and regularly sit on the Eagle Scout Board of Reviews for the Susquehanna Council.
Get your son off the couch and involved in scouting – there is a whole world of adventure out there waiting for them.  Young ladies who have finished 8th grade are eligible for joining Venturing too.  For more information on getting your son or daughter involved in scouting, visit us on the web at www.susquehannabsa.org or call the Council office at 326-5121.
