Teens and safety rarely go hand in hand, but a group of Pennsylvania’s youth is proving that safety is an important part of rural work and life. Eight teams of FFA and 4-H students from throughout the commonwealth displayed a wealth of knowledge during the Pennsylvania State University Farm Safety and Health Quiz Bowl, held at the 2010 PA Farm Show on Wed., Jan., 13.
Mifflinburg FFA topped the Chambersburg FFA, having a lead of 170 points when the final round ended. Team members included Sarah Eichenlaub, Lacey Smith, Emily Smith, and Jacob Mabus. Second through fourth place teams were Chambersburg FFA; Big Spring FFA, and Conococheague FFA.
In order to advance to the farm show team members had to place in the top four teams at Ag Progress Days, which is held in mid-August. During this contest, students are given the ability to showcase their knowledge of more than 1,000 questions pertaining to farm safety and health. Topics may include but are not limited to machinery, equipment and tools, occupational health, environmental hazards, pesticides and other chemicals, confined spaces, farm shops, special populations, and animals and livestock management. Furthermore, the contest allows students to develop their public speaking and leadership abilities.
In addition to receiving a plaque and a cash prize, each student was awarded with a duffel bag and fleece blanket. The farm safety quiz bowl is sponsored by The Pennsylvania State University Agricultural Safety and Health Program, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Division of Health and Safety.
Awards sponsors of the 2010 contest included Westfield Agribusiness Insurance Group, CNH North America, Inc., AgChoice Farm Credit, Farm Family Insurance Company, and US Department of Labor-Wage and Hour Division sponsored the safety quiz event.
