A team of Mifflinburg FFA members won the Pennsylvania Agronomy Career Development Event at this year’s FFA Activities Week at the Penn State University recently. Team members included Senior Chelynn Bingaman of Millmont, and Juniors Scott Benfer of New Berlin, and Christopher Snook and Mark DeFord of Mifflinburg. The first place Gold Medal team will represent Pennsylvania at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October.
Individually Chelynn placed first and was presented a plaque and a check for $100. Scott Benfer earned a second place Gold and also received a plaque. Chris Snook and Mark DeFord were awarded Silver Medals for their accomplishments. Team members had to identify ninety crop and weed plants and seeds plus insects, judge crops and grade grain samples according to USDA standards, use Soil surveys, soil test reports, crop budgeting, and answer numerous questions dealing with agronomic principles.
In other competition during the three day event the Agricultural Mechanics team of James Mapes, Jaden Yoder, Greg Stahl and Jacob Mabus placed sixth. Individually, Jim Mapes was awarded a Gold Medal and Jaden Yoder a Silver Medal. The Farm Business Management team of Joshua Eichenlaub, Kasey Rishel, Dennis Boop, Jr., and Jennifer Mapes also placed sixth. Individually, Josh was awarded Silver Medal while Kasey and Dennis were awarded Bronze Medals.
Marissa Ewing participated in the Dairy Showmanship CDE. She placed fifth and earned a Gold Medal for her efforts. Sarah Eichenlaub was awarded a Gold Medal in the FFA Creed Speaking Contest. Other participants included Michael Humphys, Erin Rishel, in the Horse Evaluation and SelectionContest and Audriana Ross the Wildlife Contest.
