Mifflinburg’s annual 4th of July Pet Parade saw 42 youngsters, their parents and pets parade from Market St. to the 5th St. park, bringing smiles to the many on-lookers watching the unusual menagerie. Although the number of participants was down, due to the heat, the variety was quite impressive.
Fans not only saw the usual dogs and cats, but goats, peacocks, an emu, guinea pigs, rabbits and a cockroach.
The parade is sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club which offers cash prizes to the winners in five categories, but also gives prizes to all participants.
This year’s winners in the large dog category were first: Cameron Roush whose dog was dressed as a bee, second: Aiden Baumgardner with his cheerleader dog and third: Hannah and Jillian Fee whose dog was all dressed in red, white and blue. In the small dog category, first was Kylie Kreisher with “Max,” second was Sam Holman with “Oti” and third was Milford Hoover with “Bruiser.” Showing off their cats, first was Emily Pfirman, second was Taylor Williams and third was Lily Eberhart. In the exotic/farm category, first was Rylan and Kaelex Shuck with their goats, second was Savannah Snyder with her rabbit and third was Lydia Klinefelter. In the bikes and wagons category, first was Brian Reeder, second was Vaughn Holthus and third was Paige Rhyne. Crowned as Grand Champion was Lawson Gramly with his peacocks.
Judges for this popular event were Sara Hudock, Ed and Pat Bastucheck, Florence VanDyke and Chuck Hagenbaugh.
