Teens and safety rarely go hand in hand, but a group of Pennsylvania’s youth is proving that safety is an important part of rural work and life. Eight teams of FFA and 4-H students from throughout the commonwealth displayed a wealth of knowledge during the Pennsylvania State University Farm Safety and Health Quiz Bowl, held at the 2010 PA Farm Show on Wed., Jan., 13. The quiz bowl is designed to motivate youth to increase their awareness and knowledge of agricultural safety and health issues. During the competition, students are asked a sampling of more than 1,000 questions. Categories include machinery, equipment and tools, occupational health, environmental hazards, pesticides and other chemicals, confined spaces, farm shops, special populations, and animals and livestock management. Four teams from across the state competed in the Quiz Bowl State Finals at the 2009 Pennsylvania Farm Show. The teams were winners from the semi-final contest held during Penn State’s 2008 Agricultural Progress Days. The Agricultural Safety and Health Program at Penn State University and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture manage the quiz bowl. Westfield Agribusiness Insurance Group, CNH North America, Inc., AgChoice Farm Credit, Farm Family Insurance Company, and US Department of Labor-Wage and Hour Division sponsored the safety quiz event. Awards include a team certificate, a duffel bag, fleece blanket and prize money of $650 for 1st place; $550 for 2nd place, $450 for 3rd place and $350 for 4th place. Winners of the 4-H Farm Safety and Health Quiz Bowl were: 1st place Union Co. 4-H; 2nd place Huntingdon Co. 4-H; 3rd place Cumberland Co. 4-H; and 4th place Snyder Co. 4-H Winners of the FFA Farm Safety and Health Quiz Bowl were: 1st place Mifflinburg Area FFA; 2nd place Chambersburg FFA; 3rd place Big Spring FFA; and 4th place Conococheague FFA. © Copyright 2010 by Mifflinburg Telegraph Weekly Newspaper Top of Page |
