On September 19, 2008, seventeen-year-old Erika Moyer, wearing a bright pink polo shirt supporting Mifflinburg’s football team, sat at a conference table in the Mifflinburg Area High School poised to be interviewed. A college preparatory student, Erika said, “I hope to attend Mansfield University in fall of 2009 to prepare for a career as an athletic or personal trainer. I love sports! I play soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter season, and participate in track and field in spring.”
Moyer’s dark brown eyes sparkle with enthusiasm as she spoke of her love of the soccer game. The first time I played soccer was in a kids’ tournament... I think we drove to Danville to play. Everyone was picked for a team. Although I didn’t know how to play the game, I was chosen for Team Brazil. This was the year 2000. I imagine since it was an Olympic year, all the teams were named for different countries. Anyway, I was hooked on soccer.”
Erika, this year, plays forward on the high school team and stated, “By playing the forward position, I get to score. In one game, I scored three points... the most ever for me. Last year, our high school team almost made it to districts; we missed it by one game. This year, we will play seventeen or eighteen games in the Heartland Conference. That means we play two or three games each week.  Days we have no game, we practice. I get home from practice about 5:30 p.m., eat, study, sometimes attend another sport event, and then go to bed. There are long days!”
Moyer hopes to play soccer at Mansfield. She, smilingly, said, “I’ve had e-mails from the Mansfield soccer coach and I expect to visit the college. That way, I will get to learn about the soccer and the academic programs. It will be fun to experience some of the student life while I visit.”
The 5’ 2”, feisty senior began playing basketball in junior high after participating in biddy ball as an elementary school student. “I enjoy playing point guard on the team. I like to call out the plays, to lead on court, and get everyone and myself motivated.”
In springtime, Erika will be active in track and field: a sprinter, she will compete in the 100 meter, 200 meter, 4x100 relay, and will compete in the long jump. Last year, her best jump was 16’ 5”, qualifying her for districts.
Without any hesitation Moyer said, “AP biology is my favorite subject. Mrs. (Karen) Musser is the best! She makes biology so interesting. In the science room, she uses a visual Smart Board connected to her computer.” The Smart Board allows Mrs. Musser to show  what she has downloaded into the computer. This completely eliminated the need for the chalkboards and whiteboards of former school days. Another feature of the Smart Board is the ability for one to write and draw on it.
Moyer expressed excitement for the Sept. 21- 24 intensive field trip Mifflinburg and Lewisburg AP biology students will experience at the Marine Science Consortium, in the area of Wallops Island, Virginia. The main campus is located adjacent to the NASA/Wallops Flight Facility; a second campus is on Chincoteague Bay. The 3-day coastal ecology program for pre-college students includes an oceanography research cruise, where the students can troll for sea life, submerge the specimens in salt water tanks for later examination.  Lectures on oceanography equipment and use of laboratories is provided.
Erika has been a member of the Key Club, the prom and Homecoming committees. One may see Moyer driving a 1989 maroon Buick taking Sunday pizza deliveries for Villa Roma. “I don’t want to spend a lot of money on a car,” she laughingly explained. “I would rather do sports than have more work hours to buy a nicer car.”
Her paternal grandmother, Marcine Moyer, is Erika’s role model. As the petite, vivacious young lady stated, “She is one of the strongest people I know.  She holds the family together. Through life’s ups and downs, she has been there for all of us. And, she still works!” Moyer also admires the 2008 gold-medal-Olympic girls soccer team and Olympian eight-gold medalist Michael Phelps.
Erika Dreese Moyer lives on Chestnut St., Mifflinburg. She is the daughter of Christopher R. and Tammy L. Moyer; her sister, Kimberly E., age 19, will attend Penn Tech in January, 2009.
