The American Civil War had progressed slightly more than a year when a new small town newspaper was born, the Mifflinburg Telegraph. Town and country came to life as the citizens were advised to live useful lives as they encountered the issues of the times.
Sidney Dreese is the Archivist and Special Collections Librarian at Albright College. He lives in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, with his wife and four cats. He grew up in Mifflinburg, where, at an early age, his interest in history began in the public schools. He has written the e-book: A Civil War Home Front Study: The Mifflinburg Telegraph Tells the Story. It can be purchased for download at www.pabookstore.com.
Originally written by the author as a Masters thesis, this book tells what was important to the people through news reports of what had happened in and around Mifflinburg, public opinion and editorial comment. It reflects the times noting the most important social issues. The chief crusade of the newspaper was children going to school so they would become useful citizens. It was important to be employed in an occupation and to be productive.
