The Union County Historical Society is seeking commemorative pieces of area businesses and towns to add to its collection and to display at the Union County Courthouse, the Union County Government Center, the Dale/Engle/Walker property, and other sites throughout the county over the next three years. This subject matter is particularly pertinent as the county approaches its 200th commemorative birthday in 2013.
The UCHS already has a large collection of items from the Sesquicentennial - when the county had is 150th birthday in 1963, and again, when it participated in the country's 200th birthday, the Bicentennial, in 1976.
The Society has also collected items that commemorate town and church anniversaries, as well as business milestones which are often noted on the 10th, 25th or 50th years of operation. Some area businesses operated for as long as 100 years. Society exhibits will highlight such commemorative events and showcase the advertisements that brought these anniversaries to the attention of customers and citizens.
If you have commemorative pieces to offer to the UCHS collection please contact the office at the Union County Historical Society at 524-8666 or hstorical@ptd.net. The Archives and Museum Committee is comprised of volunteers: chair Jeff Spotts; collections manager Jeannette Lasansky, and Gary Spangler, Mike Manbeck, Donna Slear, Mary Jo Spangler, and Deb Wehr.
