Mrs. Harry F. Haney of Mifflinburg, was re-elected president of the Union County Council of Parent-Teacher Association at the annual spring meeting held in the Community Building, Green Street, Mifflinburg, on Saturday. Other officers re-elected are as follows: Mrs. Paul Reamer, Laurelton, vice president; and Mrs. Howard Brosious, Lewisburg, treasurer; Mrs. Carson O. Wetzel, of Lewisburg, was elected second vice-president and Mrs. I.A. Neff, also of Lewisburg, secretary.
The morning session opened with prayer led by Mrs. Paul Gast, president of the Mifflinburg unit, followed by group singing and the flag salute. Reports were given on the last annual meeting held by the group at Lewisburg in 1944 and on an executive committee meeting held in Mifflinburg last fall. All local units in the county delivered favorable reports on financial and membership conditions. Following the election, a program on the theme “Health Today” was carried out. Mrs. Harold Hummel, supervisor of home economics in Snyder and Union Counties, discussed the topic, “Good Eating Habits.” Dr. Harold Evans, of Mifflinburg, the topic, “Prevention of Disease.” Dr. Pelson of the science department at Bucknell University spoke on, “The Importance of Science in Today’s World. Following Dr. Pelson’s address, the group adjourned for lunch to reconvene at 2 p.m. for the afternoon session which opened with a prayer by Rev. Raymond Fisher, pastor of First Lutheran Church of Mifflinburg. Mrs. Harry Katherman of Mifflinburg, served as secretary pro-tem for the day.
Mrs. Haney was elected as representative to the Central District Conference at Harrisburg to be held in the city educational building on Chestnut Street, May 15, in the form of an all-day session. Dr. Frank P. Boyer, county superintendent of schools gave an excellent address on public school education, reviewing Act. 480, regarding teachers’ salaries and pointing out the advantages of consolidation of rural schools. Dr. Boyer discussed problems of transportation regarding consolidation and explained the method of financing and organizing such a move which will not go into effect until the 1947 Legislature. He has been an active participant in the county council’s library project and it has been largely through his help that books have been contributed by county residents and distributed throughout rural schools where good reading material is necessary. Contributions of cash have also been received by interested organizations and persons realizing the urgent need for educational material by those students who have not had the opportunity to reach any sort of reading material other than the necessary school books. A mobile library unit in Union County was proposed.
Mrs. Francis Farley, New Columbia, who has served as library chairman with the county council for a number of years, announced her retirement, and was succeeded by Mrs. William Long, Mifflinburg. Mrs. Farley reported on work done in rural schools up to the present concerning the distribution of literature to the rural children in schools throughout isolated sections of the county.
During the afternoon session the Rev. Fisher spoke on the need for religious education in the public schools if democracy is to be continued. Mrs. E.C. Dunning, district vice president of the Pennsylvania Congress, of Chambersburg, representing the state president discussed the theme, “My Responsibilities in Today’s World,” explaining that we each have our particular job to complete and that no one else can do our appointed task.
