Loren Shirk Horning
Loren Shirk Horning, 15-month, 14-day-old son of Eugene Zimmerman and Anna Mae Shirk Horning, of 726 Miller Road, Lewisburg entered into eternal rest at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, April 13, 2008, in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, following a brief hospitalization.
He was born Dec. 29, 2006, in West Buffalo Township, Union County.
The Horning family has lived in Buffalo Township for the past four years and attends Vicksburg Old Order Mennonite Church.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Eli W. and Anna M. Shirk of Mifflinburg; his paternal grandparents, Harvey Z. and Ruth N. Horning of Mifflinburg; maternal great-grandmother, Maria K. Zimmerman of Ephrata; five siblings, Jolene Faye Horning, Leonard Eugene Horning, Janelle Shirk Horning, Randall Lamar Horning and Kayla Shirk Horning, all of 726 Miller Road, Lewisburg; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Marlin Shirk Horning, on Aug. 3, 1992, and a sister, Anna Ruth Horning, on June 22, 1997.
Funeral services were held Wed., April 16, in Mountain View Old Order Mennonite Church, 274 Kaiser Run Road, Millmont. Officiating was Bishop Levi N. Martin, Esra M. Zimmerman, Amos W. Nolt and Lloyd R. Zimmerman.
Serving as pallbearers were H. Lamar Horning, Leon Z. Horning, Joshua S. Oberholtzer and Duane Z. Shirk.
Burial was in Mountain View Old Order Mennonite Cemetery, Lewis Township, Union County.
The family was served by the Schwartz-Adamo Funeral and Cremation Service, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg.
Ammon Franklin Loss
Ammon Franklin Loss, 94, formerly of 360 Mill St., Mifflinburg and a resident of Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg, since 2006, entered into rest at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
He was born August 27, 1913, in Milo, New York, a son of the late John Loss and Dessie (Grubb) Loss-Kline. On April 25, 1934, in Hartleton, he married the former Dorothy Myrtle Montague. She preceded him in death on July 22, 1998.
Ammon honorably served in the National Guard, with the 109th Infantry, from June 7, 1937 until his honorable discharge June 6, 1940.
He was employed at the United States Penitentiary, Allenwood, H.L. Klose, Mifflinburg, Yorktowne Kitchens, Mifflinburg, and Chef Boy R Dee, Milton, until he retired November 1, 1975.
Ammon enjoyed gardening at his home, collecting various items, and driving for many area Mennonite families.
Surviving are one son, Franklin Loss of Atlas; one brother, Harlan Loss of Montandon; three sisters, Esther Finsterbush of Mifflinburg, Betty Spriggle of Freeburg, and Helen Dano of New York; three grandchildren, Trina Miller of Bellefonte, Brian Loss of Elizabeth City, NC, and Dorene Baker of Mifflinburg; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one daughter-in-law, Patsy R. Loss of Mifflinburg.
He was preceded in death by one son, Albert Loss; one daughter, Alice Musick; eight brothers, William, Alfred, Pete, John, and Ralph Loss, James, Walter, and Charles Kline; and two sisters, Pauline Grubb, and Dorothy Ulrich.
Funeral services were held Mon., April 14, at the Roupp Funeral Home Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Rd., Mifflinburg. The Rev. Ronald Warfle officiated.
Burial was in the Mifflinburg Cemetery.

Verna C. Marvin
Verna C. Marvin, 95, formerly of Lewisburg, died peacefully Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at the Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove, where she was a resident.
She was born Aug. 14, 1912, in Lycoming County, the daughter of the late Charles Frederick and Mary (Houser) Keebler.
Verna attended Mansfield State Teachers College, graduating with a degree in secondary education in 1933. She was one of the oldest living alumni of Mansfield University at the time of her death. She first taught in a one-room school in Lycoming County. Later in life, she taught in Rockdale, Texas, and Lewisburg. Verna is remembered as a gifted teacher who was deeply concerned about her students’ welfare.
She also worked for Rea & Derick, American Home Foods and General Interiors, Lewisburg. Verna loved the Encyclopedia Brittanica and became a saleswoman. She was known far and wide across Central Pennsylvania as the Brittanica lady. Later in life, Verna helped organize the first insect fair held by the Donald L. Heiter Community Center and also served as editor of the first senior citizen newspaper of the Union-Snyder Area Agency on Aging.
A lifelong reader and writer, her children remember whole paragraphs of Henry James being read aloud. Verna published educational articles in Instructor magazine. Her last article, on the state Department of Transportation’s wildflower plantings, appeared in Apprise, WITF’s magazine.
As a child, Verna studied piano with a conservatory-trained teacher, and she could sight-read all her life, occasionally playing in local churches.
Verna loved nature, and she planted thousands of trees on her property. In her 80s, she planted almost 100 cherry trees. Verna was the first person in Union County to sign up for the Forest Stewardship Program. In 2000, she received the Forestry Achievement Award from the Union County Conservation District in recognition of being the first person to complete the stewardship program.
A charismatic person, Verna was outgoing and generous. She will be missed by her family and friends.
Surviving are two sons, Charles F. Marvin of Incline Village, Nev., and his children, Holly and Kimberly, and Paul W. Marvin of Ormond Beach, Fla., and his children, Kathyrn and Richard; a daughter, Judith C. Marvin of Lewisburg; seven great-grandchildren; one cousin, Estella Whitmoyer; and one niece, Mary Leah Daly.
Friends and family were received Saturday, April 12, at the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Seven Mountains Audubon Society, P.O. Box 389, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
Rev. Dean McIntire
The Rev. Dean McIntire, 76, formerly of Penns Creek, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at his home.
He was born Dec. 2, 1931, in Wayne Township, Armstrong County, a son of the late Herbert F. and Tillie C. (Marshall) McIntire.
The Rev. McIntire attended Wesleyan Methodist Church in Sagamore. He was a resident of Penns Creek for 27 years before moving to NuMine. He was a professor, known as a teacher of preachers, teaching mostly Bible-related subjects, working with the Word, from 1972 to 1999 at Penn View Bible Institute, Penns Creek.
He is survived by his wife, H. Virginia (Costain) McIntire, whom he married Sept. 9, 1950; one son and daughter-in-law, Wesley L. and Janet McIntire of Titusville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca M. “Becky” and Ronald Miller of Dayton, Marsha L. and Timothy Cessna of Indiana, Pa., and Shelley O. and Daniel Price of Selinsgrove; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Wayne M. and Jane McIntire of Dayton; and one sister, Helen L. McIntire of Kittanning.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Janice N. Martin; three brothers, Carl E., H. Dale and Merle P. McIntyre; and one sister, Frances O. Craig.
Services were held Sat., April 12, at Sagamore Wesleyan Methodist Church, 2089 Third St., Sagamore. The Rev. Gabriel Morley officiated.
Interment was in Emory Chapel, Wayne Township, Armstrong County.

The family was assisted by the Bauer-Bly Funeral Home, 125 E. Main St., Dayton.
Shawn R. Michaels
Shawn R. Michaels, 34, of 136 Black Mill Road, Sunbury died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, in a fire at his home.
He was born Feb. 19, 1974, in Sunbury, a son of Richard Michaels of Sunbury and Mary Reidinger Michaels Troutman of Millmont.
Shawn was a 1992 graduate of Shikellamy High School.
He was employed in construction and as a part-time bartender at the Rescue Hose Company, Sunbury.
He was a member of the Sunbury Eagles and the East End Hose Company, Sunbury.
Shawn enjoyed fishing and playing softball.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Kelly and Rick Bernaiche of Acworth, N.H.; one brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Michelle Michaels of Herndon; nieces and nephews, Issiah, Zoe and Cicily Bernaiche, and Hunter and Dakota Michaels; and his paternal grandparents, Charles and Shirley Michaels of Northumberland.
Funeral services were held Mon., April 14, at the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.
Interment will take place at a later date in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Red Cross.
Donations may be made in Shawn’s memory to the Upper Augusta Township Fire Company, RR1, Sunbury, PA 17801.
Lloyd “Bud” G. Zimmerman
Lloyd “Bud” G. Zimmerman, 82, a lifelong resident of 2790 Grand Valley Rd., Mifflinburg, entered into rest surrounded by his family at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Kramm Healthcare Center, Milton.
He was born August 3, 1925, in Lewis Township, a son of the late Lloyd K. and Bertha V. (Krebs) Zimmerman. On June 10, 1947, at the Reformed Church Parsonage, Mifflinburg, he married the former Marian Pick, who survives.
Bud was a 1943 graduate of Mifflinburg High School.
He farmed his entire life in Lewis Township, and was also an independent truck driver.
Bud enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a lifetime member of the Hoofnagle Rod and Gun Club, Mifflin County.
Earlier in life, he was a member of the Ray’s Reformed Church, Millmont.
Surviving in addition to his wife of nearly 61 years, are three sons and one daughter-in-law, Douglas Zimmerman and his companion Sharon of Millmont, Ferlin Zimmerman and his companion Sharon of Weikert, and Kevin and Jonna Zimmerman of Mifflinburg; two daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen and Larry Miller of Jekyl Island, Georgia, and Cindy and David Lenhart of Hughesville; one sister, Joyce Strouse of Camp Hill; 11 grandchildren, Douglas C. Zimmerman, Kimberly Scholl, William Stankiewicz, Megan Miller-Skelly, Nina Rupert, Jennifer Fowler, David Lenhart, Jr., Jeremiah Zimmerman, Alica Zimmerman, Lane Zimmerman, and Landon Zimmerman; and 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Lester Zimmerman; and two sisters, Lena Wiser and Helen Libby.
Funeral services were held Mon., April 14, at the Christ United Lutheran Church, 13765 Old Turnpike Rd., Millmont. The Rev. John D. Yost officiated.
Burial was in the Lincoln Chapel Cemetery.

Helen S. Evans
Helen S. Evans, 93, of 422 Market St., Mifflinburg entered into rest at 3:45 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2008, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, following a brief illness.
The former Helen Showalter was born on Oct. 6, 1914, in Glen Iron, Union County, and spent her childhood in Lewistown. The Showalter family relocated to Lewisburg in Mrs. Evans’ teens, and she graduated from Lewisburg High School before attending Bucknell University. She met her soul mate and prefect match, Dr. Harold H. Evans, at Bucknell, and the couple wed on June 15, 1940.
Dr. Evans served in the Army during World War II, and the couple moved extensively until the end of the war, when they settled permanently in Mifflinburg. Dr. and Mrs. Evans were happily married for nearly 53 years before his death in 1993, and they have been reunited after 15 years apart.
Mrs. Evans was a member of Mifflinburg United Methodist Church, the Mifflinburg Civic Club and the Eastern Star.
She enjoyed shopping, entertaining, traveling, shopping, spending time with her family, hostessing at her daughter’s restaurant even into her 90s and, of course, shopping.
Though she stood well under 5 feet tall, she was looked up to by family members who survive her and miss her already, a daughter and son-in-law, Sue (Evans) and David E. Iddings of Mifflinburg, grandson, Drew E. Iddings and his wife, Alyssa J. Iddings, granddaughter, Ashley E. Iddings, and loving housekeeper, Arlene M. Hess.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Susan (Johnson) Showalter; sister, Thelma J. Showalter; and her husband, Dr. Harold Evans.
A memorial service was held Wed., April 9, in Mifflinburg United Methodist Church, 279 Market St. Pastor Ronald A. Warfle officiated.
Interment was private in East Side Cemetery, Mifflinburg.

Lloyd B. Sensenig
Lloyd B. Sensenig, 55, of 710 Solanco Road, Quarryville died unexpectedly on Monday, April 7, 2008.
He was born in East Earl Township, a son of Lizzie (Brubaker) Sensenig of Mifflinburg and the late Moses Z. Sensenig. He is survived by his wife, Arlene Z. (Brubaker) Sensenig. Their 32nd wedding anniversary was Nov. 22.
Lloyd was a farmer who in the last several years did some trucking too.
He was a member of Fairmount Mennonite Church.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by four children, Regina, married to Kelvin Martin of Reinholds, Daryl, married to Crystal (Weaver) Sensenig of Quarryville, Benita, married to Sheldon Nolt of Landisburg, and Bethany Sensenig, engaged to Jeffrey Sensenig, at home; 11 grandchildren, Weston, Leanna, Lanise and Daria Martin, Blake, Destiny, Brianna and Kaycee Sensenig, and Tyrell, Jadon and Carson Nolt; five brothers, Leon B., married to Eunice (Horst) Sensenig of Ephrata, Leroy B., married to Linda (Martin) Sensenig of Platteville, Wis., Harvey B., married to Lizzie (Zimmerman) Sensenig of Mifflinburg, Alvin B., married to Lizzie (Martin) Sensenig of Mifflinburg, and Marvin B., married to Lydia (Horning) Sensenig, Penn Yan, N.Y.; seven sisters, Verna B., married to John G. Shirk of Middleburg, Arlene B., married to Clarence W. Shirk of Beavertown, Minerva B., married to Alvin M. Reiff of Mifflinburg, Ella Mae, married to Harvey M. Reiff of Mifflinburg, Anna Mary, married to John M. Reiff of Latham, Mo., Norma B., married to Vernon R. Martin of Lewisburg, and Miriam B., married to Paul R. Oberholtzer of Bloomington, Wis.; and a sister-in-law, Nancy (Ringler), married to Lowell Martin of Newville.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul B. Sensenig.
Funeral services were held Fri., April 11, in Little Britain Fellowship Center, 352 Nottingham Road, Quarryville. Further services were held in Fairmount Mennonite Church with Bishop Jeremiah O. Sensenig, Bishop Curvin Zimmerman, Bishop Lester M. Martin and Clair Hurst officiating.
Interment was in the adjoining church cemetery.
The Groff-High Funeral Home, New Holland, was in charge of arrangements.
