Harry F. Dietrich
Harry F. Dietrich, 82, of 1250 Dietrich Road, Mifflinburg for 35 years, entered into rest at 7:25 p.m. Sunday, April 26, 2009, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born Jan. 4, 1927, in Lewisburg, a son of the late George Y. and Susan M. (Heckert) Dietrich. On Nov. 22, 1950, he married the former Edith M. Sauers, who survives.
Harry was a graduate of Mifflinburg High School.
Earlier in life, he was employed as a farmer. Later, Harry worked at Rosedale Dairy, New Berlin, and as a machine operator at Watsontown Brick and National Gypsum, New Columbia.
Harry attended Buffalo Valley Church of the Brethren, Mifflinburg.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 58 years, are two daughters, Emma J. Beck of Milton and Pamela F. Zimmerman and her fiance, Michael Eldred, of Mifflinburg; one granddaughter, Crystal Hoffman of Milton; one great-granddaughter, Brianna Beck of Milton; one sister, Emeline Reamer of Shamokin Dam; and one nephew, Ralph Dietrich Jr. of Mifflinburg.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Robin Dietrich; one great-grandson, Tyler Hoffman; and one brother, Ralph Dietrich.
Funeral services will be conducted privately at the convenience of the family.
A private burial will be in Buffalo Valley Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

Jon Hobart Ocker
Jon Hobart Ocker, 74, of 2655 Ridge Road, Mifflinburg entered into rest on Saturday, April 25, 2009, while doing what he loved, farming at his home.
He was born May 19, 1934, in Lewistown, a son of the late Bryson and Eleanor (Beck) Ocker. On July 11, 1958, in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mifflinburg, he married the former June Elliott, who survives.
Jon was a 1953 graduate of Mifflinburg High School. After graduation, he entered the Army and was a guard of prisoners while stationed in Germany.
Jon returned to Mifflinburg in 1955 and farmed with his father until 1969 when his father passed away, and at that time took over the family farm. He was named Dairylea Farmer of the Year in 1991. Jon was known as a progressive dairy farmer for his forward thinking. He was the first farmer in Union County to bring the Herd Grazing Program to the area. Farmers would travel from all parts of Pennsylvania to learn from Jon about grazing techniques. On July 24, 2007, after 59 years of dairy farming, Jon sold his herd, and then turned his attention to raising and selling hay, gardening in his large garden, and raising young steers.
He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mifflinburg, for 58 years.
Jon was a Pittsburgh Steeler and Penn State Football fan. He enjoyed spending time with his border collie, Jake, who was always by his side. Jon loved being surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of nearly 51 years, he is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Shawn Ocker of Mifflinburg and Michele and David Holman of Mifflinburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Bryson and Amber Ocker of Indianapolis, Ind.; three grandchildren, Brandon and Kala Nelson, and Danielle Walize; two sisters, Francelyn Goss of Enola, and Lois Smith of Mifflinburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Sidney and Martha Ocker of Sunbury; one sister-in-law, Jean Ocker of Center Valley; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Louis and Lois Elliott of Mifflinburg, Dorothy Leitzel of Selinsgrove, and Harold and Virginia Solomon of Middleburg; numerous nieces and nephews; and his border collie, Jake.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Bryson Ocker Jr.
Funeral services were held Wed., April 29, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 404 Market St., Mifflinburg. The Rev. Dennis E. Beaver, officiated.
A private burial was in Mifflinburg Cemetery, with military honors by Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410.

Anne Schoening
Anne Schoening, 97, of Jolly Grove Lane, Weikert since 1975, entered into rest at 10:05 a.m. Sunday, April 26, 2009, at Rolling Hills Manor, Millmont, where she had resided for the past six months.
She was born Feb. 2, 1912, in Newark, N.J., a daughter of the late Michael and Tekla (Fidunak) Wojeski. She was married to Clifford C. Schoening who preceded her in death in May of 1960.
Anne was employed at a factory in Roselle, N.J., were she assisted in manufacturing ammunition and missiles during World War II. She also worked at a Foodfair store in Linden, N.J.
She was a faithful woman, that loved her Lord. Anne read her Bible every day. She enjoyed crocheting, painting, cooking, baking, flowers, and gardening at her home.
Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Phyllis A. Latherow of Madera, and Barbara L. and Frank S. Paskovich of Weikert; seven grandchildren, Lisa A. Inch, Cynthia L. DeLeon, Sandra McCoy, Stephen C. Paskovich, Rhonda L. Bennett, Susan D. Hayward, and Craig J. Paskovich; 15 great-grandchildren, Nathan, Aarika, Seth, Conner, Olivia, Michael, Amanda, Jacob, Jesse, Thomas, Emily, Justin, Amber, Kelsey, and Riley; and one sister, Sophie Virpsa of Princeton, N.J.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Edward, and John; one sister, Stella Suscreba; and one grandson, Scott Latherow.
Visitors may call from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg, where a memorial service will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. with Monsignor William Richardson, as celebrant.
Burial will be in the Hironimus Union Church Cemetery, Weikert.
Donald Keith Sumner
Donald Keith Sumner, 78, of 817 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg since 1970, passed away peacefully with his children, Carol, David, and Stephen, at his side, Friday, April 24, 2009 at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. He fought a brave and courageous battle with cancer for 8 months.
He was born Dec. 28, 1930, in Athens, a son of the late Fred B. and Marian Frances (Zerby) Sumner. On Dec. 28, 1955, he married the former Yvonne Kinsman, who preceded him in death on Aug. 5, 1989.
In 1948, he graduated from Athens High School and attended Mansfield University. He earned a bachelor of science in Forestry from Penn State University in 1952 and a masters of science in Forestry from Duke University in 1956. Don served in the United States Armed Forces during the Korean War as a First Lieutenant, and then as a Captain in the Army Corp of Engineers, from 1952-1954. He was awarded the Bronze Star in 1954. He was a member of the Army Reserves on his return to the states.
Don served as a District Forester in three forest districts, Bald Eagle/Mifflinburg, Cornplanter/Warren and Gallitzin/Ebensburg from 1964-1978. He returned to Mifflinburg in 1970. He was promoted to Assistant Bureau Chief in the Office of Environmental Resources in Harrisburg from 1978-1985. He was later promoted to Bureau Chief until his retirement in July of 1990, after 34 years of service.
He was a member of the Society of American Foresters and the Pennsylvania Forestry Association, serving as past treasurer of the Rothrock Chapter. He was a faithful Penn State Nittany Lion fan, having held football season tickets for 45 years and attended several Bowl games, and a member of the Penn State Nittany Lion Club and Penn State Nittany Lion Assoc. He also enjoyed watching men’s and women’s basketball. He was an active member of the Susquehanna Valley Penn State Chapter and served as past president. He was a life member of the Mifflinburg Hose Company #1, most recently performing duties with the fire police. He was a member and past president of the Mifflinburg Kiwanis Club. He was a life member the Mifflinburg First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and Clerk of Session.
Don had a passion for Big Band music. In 1966, at a performance of the Sammy Kaye orchestra he was chosen from the audience to conduct the band. He also loved the music of Abba, and saw several performances of Mamma Mia. He enjoyed drawing, hunting, camping, canoeing, birdwatching, meteorology, and politics. He was a lifelong member of the Republican party. He greatly enjoyed family vacations at Hickory Ridge, Deep Creek Lake, Md.
Don will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. He was a kind, generous, compassionate, supportive and loving family man and friend. He always put others before himself.
He is survived by one daughter, Carol of Bellefonte; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Dalia, and Stephen and Lisa, of Silver Spring, Md.; four grandsons, Brian Allen, Patrick Brigham, Eric Blaine and Adam; nieces and nephews, Nancy Riley, Virginia Seely, Hart Seely, Tami Hogan, Lori Klopner, Jodi Hartshorne, Pam Haseltine, Pat Weitz, Glen, Kim and Penny Kinsman and Pearl Simonis; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Kinsman of Troy.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Seibel and Louise Seely; one brother, Bert; one sister-in-law, Avis Hartshorne; and two brothers-in-law, Milford and Duane Kinsman.
A memorial service was conducted Wed., April 29, at the First Presbyterian Church, 507 Green St., Mifflinburg. Pastor John Rakow officiated.
Burial was private.

Frances Jean “Fran” Shirk
Frances Jean “Fran” Shirk, 81, of 129 S. 13th St., Lewisburg entered into rest at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
She was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Paul Royer and Sara Ada Mitchell. On June 16, 1950, in Port Royal, she was united in marriage to Andrew J. Shirk, who preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1997.
Fran graduated from Mifflinburg High School and earned a bachelor of arts degree in music from Pennsylvania State University.
She taught piano part-time for more than 20 years.
Fran was a member of Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewisburg.
Fran enjoyed going out to eat with friends, knitting, playing bridge, bowling and golfing.
She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia M. Shirk of Columbia, Md.
Funeral services were held Mon., April 27, at Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 S. Third St., Lewisburg. Her pastor, the Rev. William S. Henderson, officiated.
Interment was in Hartleton Cemetery, Union County.

Kenneth I. Betsker
Kenneth I. Betsker, 67, of 2260 Wildwood Road, Mifflinburg for 46 years, entered into rest at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Hershey Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 5, 1941, in Middleburg, a son of Jean K. (Hackenberg) Shambach of Middleburg and the late Donald W. Shambach. On Aug. 17, 1963, in Penns Creek, he married the former Donna F. Loudy, who survives.
Ken was a 1959 graduate of Middleburg High School. He served in the Army from November 1959 until Oct. 31, 1965. Ken was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service performed in Verdun, France. He later served in the Army National Guard until July 8, 1969.
Ken was employed at Pennsylvania House, Lewisburg, for many years and as an administrator for the National Guard, Lewisburg. He and his wife owned and operated Bingaman’s Drive-In, Penns Creek, from 1971 until 1999.
He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Mifflinburg. Ken was a member of Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410 and Mifflinburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1964.
Ken enjoyed reading military and war books, remodeling houses, hunting and fishing. He constructed crafts in his woodworking shop at his home and enjoyed traveling to crafts shows with his wife.
In addition to his wife of nearly 46 years, he is survived by one daughter, Faye Jean Betsker of Mechanicsburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Earl G. and Nancy L. Bowersox of Middleburg; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lorraine K. and Ivan Long and Mary Alice Shambach, all of Middleburg; one niece, Michelle L. and her husband William C. Romig of Middleburg; and three great-nephews, Zachary, Adam and Noah Romig, all of Middleburg.
Funeral services were held Fri., April 24, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 417 Market St., Mifflinburg. The Rev. Susan Gabbard officiated.
Burial was in Mifflinburg Cemetery with military honors by Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410.
