James N. Gower
James N. Gower, 24, of 2758 Johnson Mill Road, Lewisburg passed away Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, as a result of injuries from an ATV accident.
Born Sept. 29, 1985, in Lewisburg, he was a son of Nicholas J. Gower and Karen (Hamilton) Foster, who survive.
James was employed as a machine operator at New Berlin Plastics. He was an avid fisherman and could often be found camping and fishing at Pine Creek.
James was capable of fixing just about anything, and especially liked to work on vehicles. His knowledge of football and basketball was so vast that he could practically do the announcer's commentary on ESPN.
He rode horses and loved the company of his labrador, Bear.
James was a perfectionist whose goal was to do everything better than anyone else. He was well-liked by everyone who met him and always remembered his friends and family.
Surviving in addition to his father, of Lewisburg, and his mother, a Master Sergeant serving in the U.S. Air Force for 27 years and currently stationed in Korea, are one daughter, Courtney Park of Watsontown; his maternal grandmother, Ellen Hamilton of Watsontown; six aunts and three uncles.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Hugh Hamilton, who died in 2002; his paternal grandparents, Nicholas and Eleanor Gower; two uncles, Hugh Hamilton, who died in 1989, and Robert Gower; and an aunt, Nancy Gower.
Memorial services were held Wed., Aug. 18, at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg. The Rev. John E. Lee, pastor of West Milton United Methodist Church, officiated.
Robert W. Swanger
Robert Warren Swanger, 81, of 201 E. Market St., Mifflinburg since 1990, entered into rest at 10:06 a.m., Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at his home.
He was born July 19, 1929, in Lewisburg, a son of the late Charles S. and Olie U. (Chappel) Swanger. On Oct. 10, 1953, in Mazeppa, he married the former Freida I. Aikey, who survives.
Robert was a Korean War veteran, honorably serving in the 45th Army Infantry from 1950 to 1953.
He was employed as a mill operator at Ralston Purina, Lewisburg, for 36 years.
Robert was a life member of the Mifflinburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1964, and the Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410.
Surviving in addition to his wife of nearly 57 years, are one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Robin Swanger of Weikert; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Joan and Karl Ross, Virginia and Carl Gilbert, and Debra Swanger and her companion Mike Weller, all of Mifflinburg; one brother, Donald Swanger of Brockport, NY; three sisters, Ethelda Clayton of Milton, Leola Dornsife of Mifflinburg, and Laurabelle Lloyd of West Milton; seven grandchildren, Amy Weller, Travis Ross, Philip Gilbert, Brad Gilbert, Christina Klinefelter, Derek Swanger, and Matthew Swanger; and eight great-grandchildren, Kari Ann, Alexis, Lydia-Kay, Bekki, Melody, Colin, Annika, and Madeson.
He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Clarence Swanger, in infancy; seven brothers, Willard, John, Tom, Ralph, Russel, Earnest, and Paul; and three sisters, Myrtle Reedy, Edna Brown, and Betty Diehl.
Funeral services were held Tues., Aug. 17, at the First Church of the Nazarene, 12 E. Market St., Mifflinburg. Rev. Wayne S. Krell officiated, assisted by Pastor Ron Wagner.
Burial was in the Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors by the Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Evangelical Hospice, 1 Hospital Dr., Lewisburg, PA 17837.
Funeral arrangements were by Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Rd., Mifflinburg.
William J. Vogel
William J. Vogel, 89, of Harrisburg, passed away Thursday, August 12, 2010 in the Middletown Home. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Gayle Harper Vogel.
Bill is survived by three children, Neil Vogel, wife, Donna, of Rutherford Heights, Beverly Zerbe, husband, Gary, of York Haven, and Eric Vogel, wife, Bonnie, of Birdsboro; six grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren.
Bill retired from the railroad at the age of 62. He started out on the Pennsylvania Railroad and worked on the Penn Central Railroad for 39 years.
Bill was born in 1921 in Barry, PA in the home of his parents. He was the last of six children. He was a graduate of Mifflinburg High School, Class of 1938.
He was a devoted husband, a loving father, grand and great-grandfather, and a great fan of the Steelers, Phillies, and the Penn State football team.
Funeral services were held Tues., Aug. 17, in the Neill Funeral Home, 3501 Derry St., Harrisburg.
Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
Nancy M. Spriggle
Nancy M. Spriggle, 71, of Mifflinburg, went home to be with her son, Greg, on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010, in the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
She was born Oct. 5, 1938, in Winfield, a daughter of the late Henry F. Sr. and Alverta (Fisher) Roush.
She attended Freeburg High School, where she played basketball and was a majorette in the band.
Nancy was employed by the former Amity Hall Restaurant, the former Iron Skillet Restaurant, and JPM Manufacturing, and last worked at Pennsylvania House Furniture, Lewisburg, where she was the first woman to work in the drawer making department. Her children stated that she left Pennsylvania House due to the fact that she had unruly children that made their babysitter cry, therefore she then became the babysitter rather than work.
Nancy enjoyed ladies shuffleboard, ladies darts and was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary of Northumberland, Post 44. She was the “Bingo Babe,” as she loved bingo playing, solving jigsaw puzzles and spending time with her family, especially her grand and great-grandchildren. Nancy was a wonderful cook and was known for her skill in making a “mean bird in the nest” for her family. She also enjoyed camping and eating burnt hot dogs.
She is survived by four children and their spouses, Luci Spriggle, of Mifflinburg, Renee Russell and her fiancé, Dale Cardell, of Sunbury, Troy and Tammy Spriggle and Cory and Melody Spriggle, all of Mifflinburg; grandchildren, Kyle H., Krisa M., Todd R., Cody H., Shelbi K., Michael J., David F., Shylo R., Carrie M., Danielle R., and Nicole J.; two great-grandchildren, Owen G. and Neveah E.; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Mary and Clair Berge, of Lewisburg, and Debra Paul, of Shamokin.
She was preceded by her beloved son, Gregory L. Spriggle on March 19, 2007, one brother, Henry F. Roush Jr., on Nov. 25, 1997, and twin granddaughters and one grandson.
Funeral services were held Mon., Aug. 16, at the George P. Garman Funeral Homes, Inc., 9366 Route 35, Mount Pleasant Mills. Pastor Gregory Davidson officiated.
Burial was made in Fairview Cemetery, Freeburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given in loving memory of Nancy to a charity of the donors choosing.
E. Joseph Cassidy
E. Joseph Cassidy, 62, of 35 Gateway Lane, Laurelton, passed away at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, surrounded by his family at his home.
On Nov. 16, 1974, he married Karen E. (Watras) Cassidy, who survives. His death breaks a martial union of 35 years.
Joe was an Army veteran.
He was member of God's Missionary Church, Millmont, where he served as a deacon and treasurer.
He was a loving spouse, father, brother and friend who enjoyed fishing and camping with his family.
In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by three sons and one daughter-in-law; Steve S. and Jeannie Cassidy, of Chambersburg, Phillip J. Cassidy and Andrew J. Cassidy, both of Laurelton; two daughters, Susanna C. Cassidy and Rebecca J. Cassidy, both of Laurelton; and one brother and sister-in-law, Stanley J. and Diane Watras, of Boyertown.
Funeral services were held Sat., Aug. 14, at God's Missionary Church, 14495 Old Turnpike Road, Millmont. Pastor Frederick C. Bennett and Rev. Arlan Kratz officiated.
Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery, Penns Creek.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Schwartz-Adamo Funeral and Cremation Services, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg.
