Oliver W. Hummel
    Oliver W. Hummel, 78, of 8175 State Route 304, Mifflinburg entered into rest at 5:25 p.m., Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
    Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg.

Betty Arlene Swartz
    Betty Arlene Swartz, 85, of 1283 Swartz Road, Lewisburg entered into rest on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at 9:35 a.m. at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, where she was a patient since Jan. 31, 2010. She had resided in the Black Run area of Buffalo Township since 1950, and prior to that lived in West Milton.
    She was born Feb. 12, 1924, in West Milton, a daughter of the late Hattan and Mary E. (Hoffman) Moore. She was united in marriage on March 26, 1948, in West Milton, to Weldon Eugene Swartz, who preceded her in death on Aug. 28, 1996.
    During World War II, Betty was employed at Chef Boy-ar-dee, Milton, and since then was a homemaker.
    She was a member of Four Square Gospel Church, Lewisburg, an active member of the Union County Democratic Women, a social member of the Yoder-Zimmerman Post 1964 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mifflinburg, and the Wallace W. Fetzer Post 71 American Legion, Milton. For many years Betty served as the pianist at the Black Run Church, Lewisburg.
    She is survived by 11 children and their spouses, Hugh E. Swartz, of Northumberland, James E. and Cheryl L. Swartz, of Lewisburg, Wayne H. and Patsy A. Swartz, of Lewisburg, Mary E. Wise, of Milton, Dennis O. Swartz, of Lewisburg, Brenda L. Swartz, of Lewisburg, Kaye M. Harrison, of Littleton, Colo., Barry L. and Linda Swartz, of Lewisburg, Scott E. and Michele Swartz, of Denver, Colo., Earl A. and Brenda L. Swartz, of Lewisburg, and Dixie L. and John Paladino, of Lewisburg; 19 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Alverna Miller, of Milton; one brother, Leland D. Moore, of Lewisburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Hattan Jr., Bernard, and Robert Moore.
    Visitors will be received from 10:30 a.m. to noon Thurs., Feb. 11, at Schwartz-Adamo Funeral and Cremation Service, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg, followed by the funeral service at noon, with the Rev. Michael C. Romig, pastor of Dreisbach United Church of Christ, Lewisburg, officiating.
    Memorials in Betty’s memory may be made to Children’s Miracle Network, Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA 17821.

Virginia Mae (Wert) Zimmerman
    Virginia Mae (Wert) Zimmerman, 74, of State Route 405,  Watsontown passed away on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at the Williamsport Hospital.
    She was born Sept. 13, 1935, in West Milton, a daughter of the late Oliver and Ruth (Woomer) Wert. She was married to Roland Zimmerman who preceded her in death.
    Ginny was a graduate of Milton High School and Clearfield Nursing School.
    She was employed as a nurse for 42 years, retiring in 1998.
    She was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church where she was in the choir and the good news club and a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
    Ginny was a social butterfly who enjoyed traveling, bowling, playing cards and doing crossword puzzles. She was affectionately known as the cookie lady.
    She is survived by one son, Leo O. DeMi, of Berwick; two stepdaughters, Sherry DeFrain, of Milton, and Linda Zimmerman, of Mifflinburg; three brothers, Tom Wert, of South Carolina, Harry Wert, of Lewisburg, and Bill Wert, of Milton; seven sisters, Shirley Coup, Linda Wagner, Holly McNeal, Susan Swartzlander, Sandra Bardick, all of Milton, Mary Lou Birtley, of Numidia, and Margaret Fry, of Turbotville; and two grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by one daughter, Renee, and one stepdaughter, Debbie.
    Friends and relatives will be received from noon to 1 p.m. Sat., Feb. 13, at Friendship Baptist Church, 10 Voris Lane, Watsontown, followed by a memorial service at 1.
    The family will provide the flowers and ask that memorials in Ginny’s memory be made to Friendship Baptist Church, 10 Voris Lane, Watsontown, PA 17777, or to the Evangelical Community Hospital, 1 Hospital Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
    Arrangements are under the care of the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milton, PA 17847.

John Clinton Stahl Sr.
    John Clinton Stahl Sr., 78, of 723 Rusty Run Lane, Mifflinburg entered into rest at 3:53 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in East Buffalo Township.
    He was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Lewisburg, a son of the late Wells Gilbert and Beulah Alvesta (Kratzer) Stahl. John shared 28 years with his companion, Roxann L. Davis.
    John was a professional truck driver, working for various transportation companies over his 38 years of service.
    He was a member of the Union County Sportsman’s Club, where he participated in bench rest shooting.
    John’s interests included hunting, NASCAR and spending time with friends.
    He is survived by one son, John C. Stahl Jr., of Milton; one daughter, Judith Ann Wright, of Milton; one stepdaughter, Debra Davis, of Dryden, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
    Visitors will be received by the family from 10 to 11 a.m. Fri., Feb. 12, at the Schwartz-Adamo Funeral and Cremation Services, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg, where the funeral will follow at 11 with the Evangelist Daryl Willow officiating.
Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Montgomery.
    Memorial contributions in John’s memory may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1948 E. Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701.

Lucille M. “Lucy” Mattern
    Lucille M. “Lucy” Mattern, 92, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg. Most recently of Mifflinburg, Lucy previously lived in McClure, Lewistown, Baltimore, Md., from 1957 to 1982 and Lewisburg from 1982 to 1993.
    A celebration of life service was held Sat., Feb. 6, at Buffalo Valley Church of the Brethren, 46 Brethren Church Road, Mifflinburg. Her pastor, the Rev. Randall C. Fiske officiated.
    Burial was in McClure Union Cemetery.

Martha Emma Walter
    Martha Emma Walter, 92, formerly of 111 Shipton St., Mifflinburg for 31 years, entered into rest at 7:55 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg, where she had been a resident since 2004.
    She was born May 30, 1917, in the Brownstown section of Johnstown, a daughter of the late Ernst and Emile (Minter) Wicknick. On June 16, 1951, in Winchester, W.Va., she married Kenneth Walter, who preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 2005.
    Around the time of World War II, Martha moved to Milton for employment. It was there that she met the love of her life, Kenneth Walter, at a roller skating rink. After marriage, they built a house in Lewisburg, and eventually moved back to the Walter Farm in Mifflinburg. Martha was a city girl who learned to live on a farm and work side-by-side with her husband. She also found time to make quilts and preserve food, skills she learned from her mother.
    Martha was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Cowan.
    Martha was part of a large, loving family and an aunt to numerous nieces and nephews who hold her in high regard. Though she did not have children of her own, she was a wonderful aunt and role model who will be greatly missed. She considered the Coddington family, of Mifflinburg, to be her family and cherished her role as “grandma” to their children and grandchildren.
    She is survived by one sister, Elsie Anna Hess, of Johnstown.
    She was preceded in death by her siblings, Helen Johnston, Paul A. Wicknick, Freida M. Bothwell, Henry A. Wicknick, Eric E. Wicknick, Albert E. Wicknick, William G. Wicknick, Dorothy K. Williams and Mildred J. Kerrick.
    Funeral services were held Fri., Feb. 5,  at the Roupp Funeral Home Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg. The Rev. James H. Gold officiated.
    Burial was in Lewisburg Cemetery.
    Memorial contributions may be made in Martha’s memory to Cowan Trinity Lutheran Church, 2599 Church Road, Mifflinburg, PA 17844.
