Lucille M. “Lucy” Mattern
     M. “Lucy” Mattern, 92, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg. Most recently of Mifflinburg, Lucy previously lived in McClure, Lewistown, Baltimore, Md., from 1957 to 1982 and Lewisburg from 1982 to 1993.
    She was born June 18, 1917, in Bannerville, the daughter of the late John David and Annie Pearl (Peters) Lash. On June 21, 1941, in Winchester, Va., she married Andrew “Tim” Mattern, who preceded her in death on July 3, 1996.
    Lucy was a 1934 graduate of McClure High School. She graduated in 1973 from Towson State University, Phi Theta Kappa, with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education Lucy also held a real estate license in Maryland.
    Lucy and her husband owned and operated Tim’s Restaurant in McClure from 1946 to 1951. Most of all, Lucy was a mother and homemaker.
Lucy was a lifelong and active member of Church of the Brethren, first in Bannerville, then Dundalk in Baltimore and most recently Buffalo Valley Church of the Brethren since 1982. She was a rather quiet witness except when given the opportunity to preach a sermon, which she did on a number of occasions. Lucy enjoyed playing the organ and piano. She also taught Sunday school, served as a deacon for many years and was active in the Women’s Fellowship and the Golden Oldies. Her greatest desire and daily prayer request was that her family would all know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.
    She was a volunteer at Evangelical Community Hospital for several years.
    Lucy enjoyed Bible reading and study, cooking and baking, quilting, sewing, crafts and especially her family.
    She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Michael and Jane Mattern, of Wyoming, Del.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carole and Marlin Hoffmaster, of Mifflinburg, Bonnie Mattern, of Santa Monica, Calif., and Vicki and Jeff Bastian, of Mifflinburg; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Graham, John Graham, Christopher Graham, Marcy Bird, Mark Graham, Jennifer Tennis, Michael B. Mattern, Amy Beth Bastian and Jonathan Bastian; and eight great-grandchildren.
    In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one half brother, Raymond Baker, and one daughter, Karen Sue, in infancy.
    Friends and family will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Sat., Feb. 6, at Buffalo Valley Church of the Brethren, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 with Rev. Randall C. Fiske officiating.
    Burial will be in McClure Union Cemetery.
    Memorial contributions in Lucy’s memory may be made to the Buffalo Valley Church of the Brethren Building Fund, 46 Brethren Church Road, Mifflinburg, PA 17844.
    The family wishes to thank some very special caregivers that Lucy had during her stay at RiverWoods. Their wonderful care and love will never be forgotten.

Cordell L. Page
    Cordell L. Page, 15, of 514 Slaugenwhite Road, Montoursville passed away on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, as the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Jan. 25.
    He was born Nov. 11, 1994, in Montour County, a son of Larry and Deb Page, of Cogan Station, and Kimberly Gair and Barry Winter, of Montoursville.
    Cordell was a freshman at Montoursville High School, where he played football and started on the varsity wrestling team. He was a member of FFA and the ag program, a 4-H member who had shown animals for seven years and a member of Journey’s End Hunting Club.
He was an avid outdoorsman, which included four-wheeling and farming. He always enjoyed his summer job at Winter’s Lumber and looked forward to the day he could be a Marine, then work with his father.
    In addition to his parents, he is survived by paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Page, of Mifflinburg; maternal grandparents, John D. Smith III, of Milton, Carl and Anne Swartz, of Milton, and Harry Winter, of Cogan Station; two brothers, Sean Gair, of Barbours, and William Page, of Montoursville; two sisters, Melissa (Kevin) Nickels, of Montandon, and Rachel Winter, of Montoursville; and four nieces, Aspen, Mackenzie, Kiera and Regan.
    Friends will be received from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Fri., Feb. 5, in the gymnasium at Montoursville High School, 100 N. Arch St., Montoursville, where the funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Connie A. Waugh officiating.
    Burial will be private for the family in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
    In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a scholarship fund in Cordell’s memory, c/o Montoursville High School.

Paul Jones “P.J.” Curry
    Paul Jones “P.J.” Curry, 80, of 312 Stone Haven Road, Mifflinburg for the past 23 years, entered into rest at 6:25 p.m., Friday Jan. 29, 2010 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
    He was born in Wilmington, Del. on Aug. 15, 1929, a son of the late Paul Jones Sr. and Anne (Egan) Curry. On Jan. 4, 1992, he married the former Shirley A. Bolig, who survives.
    Paul was a 1947 graduate of Carson Long Military Institute and earned his degree in civil engineering at the University of Delaware in 1954.
    He honorably served in the Air Force as a Link Trainer, training fighter pilots during the Korean War.
    He was employed for 32 years as a building engineer for Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania.
    Paul faithfully attended the Mifflinburg United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir.
    Paul sang bass for the Buffalo Valley Singers for many years. He also served as the band’s stage manager.
    He was skilled at construction and design and his craftsmanship has been utilized in many ways. Paul built the outside doors at the Mifflinburg United Methodist Church; a live scale steam locomotive on display at the Carriage Corner Restaurant, Mifflinburg; many display items for the Mifflinburg Christkindl Market and endless woodworking items for his family and friends. He was recognized for his assistance in the design and construction of the St. George Church, Mifflinburg.
    Paul enjoyed golfing, equestrian dressage and traveling with his wife.
    Surviving in addition to his wife of 18 years are four daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah L. and Geoffrey Savage, of Wilmington, Sondra J. and Paul Weidman, of Telford, Angela S. and Michael Kreisher, of Mifflinburg and Lori A. and Joseph Bollinger, of State College; and nine grandchildren. He was known as “Grandpa” to Jeffrey and Daniel Coleman; as “Boompa” to Shawn Motter and Kylee Kreisher; as “Pop-Pop” to Brooke, Connor and Ethan Bollinger and “Boppy” to William Savage.
    A celebration of Paul’s life will be conducted at 3 p.m., Sun., Feb. 7,  at the Mifflinburg United Methodist Church, 279 Market St., with Rev. Ronald Warfle and Pastor Calvin Morgan, officiating.
    Memorial contributions may be made to either the Mifflinburg United Methodist Church, 279 Market St., Mifflinburg, PA 17844, or to the Union County Chapter of the American Red Cross, International Disaster Relief Fund, 249 Farley Circle, Lewisburg, PA 17837.

Ruth Audrey Shirk
    Ruth Audrey Shirk, 94, of Kingston, formerly of Milton, Lewisburg and Dallas, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at ManorCare, Kingston.
    She was born Aug. 9, 1915, in Northumberland, a daughter of the late Malcolm E. and Pauline (Fisher) Hannon. On Jan. 30, 1937, in Frederick, Md., she was united in marriage to Neal Franklin Shirk, who passed away on Sept. 9, 1977.
    Ruth was a graduate of Northumberland High School.
    She was employed as an executive secretary at Philco/Ford, Watsontown.
    Ruth was a former member of First Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg.
    She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Neal R. and Helen Shirk, of New Cumberland; one daughter, Judith A. Miller, of West Pittston; one brother and sister-in-law, Malcolm E. and Arlene Hannon, of Arlington, Va.; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia A. Zellers; a devoted companion, Dr. Robert M. Bastress, of Selinsgrove; three sisters, Dorothy E. Buss, Mary H. Weidner and Etta M. Hannon; and one grandson, Adam Miller.
    Funeral services were held Sat., Jan. 30,  at Schwartz-Adamo Funeral and Cremation Services, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg. Robert Kribbs, certified lay pastor of the Northumberland Presbytery, officiated.
    Burial was in Hartleton Cemetery, Hartley Township, Union County.

Helen P. Gearhart
    Helen Pauline Gearhart, 93, of 889 Fairground Road, Lewisburg, died at 8:10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, in the Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg, where she had lived since May 2007. Prior to living at Buffalo Valley, she had resided at 6580 Old Turnpike Road, Vicksburg, for many years.
    Born Feb. 23, 1916, in Buffalo Township, she was a daughter of the late Warren James and Mary Alberta Leinbach Gearhart.
    She attended the Vicksburg Public School and was a graduate with the Class of 1934 of the Mifflinburg High School.
    She retired in 1980 after 30 years employment as a salesperson with the former J.J. Newberry Company, Lewisburg. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, Lewisburg, where she was a member of the adult Sunday school class and served many years on the church Altar Guild. She was a member of the Vicksburg Flower Club and enjoyed raising flowes and was a self-proclaimed oil picture painter. She also served as a volunteer at the Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg, for many years.
    She is survived by a sister-in-law, Kathryn Marie Gearhart, Lewisburg.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Mae Gearhart on Nov. 2, 1965, and a brother, Paul Warren Gearhart on Jan. 29, 2009.        Funeral services were held Wed., Feb. 3,  at the Faith Lutheran Church, 2349 Old Turnpike Road, Lewisburg. The Rev. Gregory  A. Davidson, her pastor, officiated.
    Interment was in the Dreisbach Church Cemetery, Buffalo Township.
    Memorials in her name may be made to the Faith Lutheran Church, 2349 Old Turnpike Road, Lewisburg, Pa. 17837.
    Arrangements were under the care of the Schwartz-Adamo Funeral and Cremation Service, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg.
