Russel Franklin Eisenhuth
Russel Franklin Eisenhuth, 66, of 2065 Pleasant Grove Road, entered into rest at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at his home.
He was born June 1, 1943, in Lewisburg, a son of the late Neil Eisenhuth and Miriam L. (Boop) Eisenhuth Wirth. On April 9, 1990, he married the former Linda J. Althof Williams, who survives.
Russel attended Mifflinburg High School and honorably served in the Army.
He was employed as a Senior General Resident Engineer in Construction Management for Jacobs Engineering Company, Arlington, Va.
He was a member of the Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410.
Russel was a ham radio operator and enjoyed fishing and traveling.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Russel C. and Lorraine R. Eisenhuth, of Laurelton, and David F. and Jennifer Eisenhuth, of Mifflinburg; one daughter, Sherri L. Eisenhuth, of Harrisburg; and four grandchildren, Jonathan Eisenhuth, of Mifflinburg, Nyssa and her husband David Stem, of Mifflinburg, Maggie Eisenhuth, and Chloe Eisenhuth, both of Watsontown.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Arthur L. Wirth.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Russel F. Eisenhuth and also his mother Miriam L. Wirth, who passed away October 16, 2009, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg, with the Rev. Richard M. VonNeida officiating.
Interment will be in the Long Lane Cemetery, Laurelton

Mary E. Aikey
Mary E. Aikey, 81, of 30 S. 18th St., passed away on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg.
She was born Nov. 30, 1928, in Lewisburg, a daughter of the late Elmer and Mary (Berger) Farley. On July 24, 1948, she married her husband of 61 years, Maurice L. Aikey, who survives.
Mary was a 1946 graduate of Lewisburg High School.
She retired in 1990 from the former JPM Ind., Lewisburg, where she worked in assembly for 25 years.
Mary was fond of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda L. and Ronald Aurand, of Lewisburg, Karen A. and James Adams, of Mifflinburg, and Sandra K. and Larry Crebs, of Winfield; one son and daughter-in-law, James A. and Angie Aikey, of Lewisburg; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held in Mazeppa Union Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Ricky A. Phillips, pastor of Mazeppa Union Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the American Cancer Society-Union County Unit, 57 Reitz Blvd., Lewisburg, PA 17837 or the American Heart Association, 1704 Warren Ave., Williamsport, PA 17701.
The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg.
Jean M. Kratzer
Jean M. Kratzer, 66, of 11543 Route 104, passed away on Saturday morning, Dec. 26, 2009, at home surrounded by her family. Her passing followed a short battle with cancer.
She was born Jan. 10, 1943, in Mifflinburg, a daughter of the late Robert L. Smith Sr. and Esther E. Weller Smith. On Nov. 19, 1960, she married Paul W. Kratzer, who survives.
She had been employed for the past 25 years at the Middleswarth Potato Chip plant in Middleburg. Earlier in her life, she had worked for area garment factories.
The great joy of her life were her grandchildren and the highlight of the year for Jean was the annual vacation with the family to Ocean City, Md. She enjoyed basket bingo, attending yard sales, collecting Longaberger baskets and snowmen.
In addition to her husband of 49 years, she is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn J. and Dale Rhoads, of Middleburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul W. Jr. and Tamie Kratzer, of Middleburg; four grandchildren, Heather and Kyle Rhoads and Tyler and Nicholas Kratzer; one brother, Dennis Michael Smith, of Mifflinburg; and four sisters, Nancy E. Ely, of Middleburg, Sandra L. Rudy, of Mifflinburg, Kathy E. Pyle, of Mount Pleasant Mills, and Linda F. Smith, of Mifflinburg.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister, Wayne C. and Robert L. Smith Jr. and David A. and Gail L. Smith, both in infancy.
Funeral services were held Wed., Dec. 30, at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg. The Rev. Alvin E. Smith officiated.
Burial was in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Selinsgrove.

Judith M. “Judy” Stauffer
Judith M. “Judy” Stauffer, 66, of Middleburg, entered into rest after a lengthy illness at her home on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009.
Judy was born Feb. 26, 1943, in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Frederick Germer and Jane (Bilger) Germer-Liggan. On Sept. 13, 1985, she married Luther S. Stauffer, who survives. Her passing breaks a marital union of 24 years.
She retired after 26 years of service in the jewelry department of Boscov’s, Hummels Wharf.
Judy attended Botschaft’s (Grubbs) Lutheran Church, Mount Pleasant Mills.
She enjoyed gardening, vacationing and spending time with her family and friends and had a special love of cats.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, David F. Knepp, of Salem, Ore., Corinne E. Coulter and her companion, David J. Siebert, of Mifflinburg, and Douglas S. Knepp and his wife, Linda, of Marysville; two grandchildren; one brother; one stepbrother; two stepsisters; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by her stepfather, Dan Liggan, and one stepbrother.
There will be no viewing. Services and burial will be at the discretion of the family.

Shirley Baker Schell
Shirley Baker Schell, 74, of 108 Willowbrook Blvd., Lewisburg, formerly of Laurelton, entered into rest after a lengthy illness at 8:35 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
She was born March 26, 1935, in Venango County, a daughter of the late Arthur Lincoln and Edith Viola (McKean) Baker. She was married to Richard Schell, who preceded her in death.
Shirley was employed as a nurse and as a supervisor at the Laurelton State Center for many years. Her loving nature and sense of humor made a great difference in the lives of the people for whom she provided care.
She was a member of the Union County Sportsmen’s Club, Weikert, and greatly enjoyed fishing and being outdoors.
Shirley was a talented artist and left behind beautiful paintings and ink drawings. She also enjoyed traveling, gardening, bowling and being in the company of her many friends.
Surviving are one brother, James E. Baker, of Nashville, Ga.; one sister, Pat McElhattan, of Cyclone; eight grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sons, David, Robert and Steven Covert; one daughter, Kenda Freeborough; two brothers, Bill and Paul Baker; and one sister, Nancy Anderson.
Funeral services will be conducted privately at the convenience of the family.

Eudalia N. “Dale” Hoffer
Eudalia N. “Dale” Hoffer, 91, of 65 Queen St., entered into rest at 7:05 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg.
She was born June 6, 1918, in Middleburg, a daughter of the late Cleaver and Dorothy (Newman) Kessler. On Oct. 19, 1940, she married Simon A. Hoffer, who preceded her in death in 1982.
Dale was a homemaker and enjoyed playing cards and gardening.
She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Lester A. and Linda Hoffer, of Lewisburg and Barry L. Hoffer, of Lancaster; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan M. and Samuel J. Diehl, of Montgomery and Beverly A. and Charles O’Donnell, of Sheppton; two brothers, Jack Kessler, of Mifflinburg and Willard Kessler, of Hartleton; two sisters, Irene Bingaman, of Mifflinburg and Hazel Kreisher, of Collegeville; 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Hoffer, five sisters, and two brothers.
Funeral services were held on Mon., Dec. 28, at the Mazeppa Union Church, 3200 Johnson Mill Road, Lewisburg. The Rev. Ricky Phillips, Evangelical Home Hospice Chaplin, officiated.
Interment was in the New Berlin Cemetery.

Frances Stine Kahn
Frances Stine Kahn, 98, formerly of West Mill Street, Selinsgrove passed away early Monday morning, Dec. 21, 2009, at the Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove.
She was born Nov. 15, 1911, in Penns Creek, a daughter of the late Fred and Edna (Shambach) Stine. She was married to Sam L. Kahn for 40 years until his passing.
The couple operated Fran’s Dress Shop, Sunbury, for 45 years.
Fran had lived in Baltimore earlier in her life and had modeled in Bennish’s Dept. Store and was the second runner up in the 1935 Miss America Contest where she was Miss Baltimore.
She had volunteered at the Sunbury Community Hospital, a member of the Susquehanna Valley Country Club, the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Fran was an avid golfer and loved to play solitaire and scrabble.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Saundra L. and Jay Updyke, of Middleburg; six grandchildren, Greg and Brett Kahn, Joe Dunkelberger, Bill Pyers, Jill Monahan, and Jack Treas; nine great-grandchildren, Madison, Allison, Megan, Joseph Barry, Ben, Jack, Taylor, Joe, and Nick; two daughters-in-law, Virginia Treas of Shamokin Dam and Ann Kahn of Mount Pleasant Mills.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Jean Bastian, two sons, Dr. J. Barry Kahn and Jack Treas., and two brothers, Schuyler Stine and Hanson “Ed” Stine.
A memorial service was conducted Mon., Dec. 28, at the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove. Rabbi Nina H. Mandel officiated.

Leon Norman Roadarmel
Leon Norman Roadarmel, 88, of 423 Green St., Mifflinburg since 1957, entered into rest at 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at his home.
He was born April 22, 1921, in Mifflinburg, a son of the late Nellie (Walter) Roadarmel.
Leon was a 1939 graduate of Mifflinburg High School. He served in the Army Air Corp Signal Corp, in the Pacific, from 1940 until he was honorably discharged in 1945 with rank of Master Sergeant.
He was employed by various woodworking industries in the area.
Leon was a member of the St. John’s United Church of Christ, Mifflinburg, for 76 years, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1964, American Legion Post 410, and Loyal Order of Moose, all in Mifflinburg.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and spending time in the outdoors. Leon especially enjoyed sharing time with his family at his camp in Huntingdon County. He also enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the history of Mifflinburg. Leon was a good neighbor, and was known for taking care of the neighborhood cat, “Arthur.”
Surviving are one nephew, Gary A. Dreibelbis, of Cincinnati; two nieces, Diane and her husband Wally Brown, of Casco, Maine, and Claire Andrews, of Scarboro, Maine; one great-nephew, Michael Dreibelbis, of Rensselaer, N.Y.; two great nieces, Jamie Andrews, and Lisa Andrews, of Scarboro; and his adopted family, Susan Smith, of Williamsport, John and April Smith, of Tennessee, Lisa and Jeff Dincher and family of Jersey Shore, Heidi and Jeff Cupp, of Jersey Shore, and the Multher family.
He was preceded in death by his companion, Gladys A. Ranck; two brothers, Earl Walter and Clair Dreibelbis; and sisters-in-law, Katherine Walter, Mary K. Dreibelbis, and Joan Dreibelbis.
Funeral services were held Wed., Dec. 23, at the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg. The Rev. Susan Gabbard officiated.
Burial was in Ray’s Church Cemetery, Lewis Township.

Esther (Rose) Mensch Matney
Esther (Rose) Mensch Matney, of Homewood in Frederick, Md. and a part-time resident of Marco Island, Fla., died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, due to complications of the lungs.
She was born June 24, 1922, in Mifflinburg, the daughter of the late Arnold E. Mensch and Edna Bardell Mensch Minnick. She was married to the late Robert T. Matney, who preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 2001.
Esther was a 1939 graduate of Mifflinburg High School, always making it a point to attend all reunions held for 65 years.
Mrs. Matney served as a sergeant in the Air Force, World War II, in 1945 and 1946.
She was the loving mother of four children: Lynn Matney Collins, Sharon Matney Ferro and son-in-law, Joseph B. Ferro, of Laytonsville; her son, Robert Hamilton Matney and daughter-in-law, Darcey Matney of Damascus; and her son, Richard Taylor Matney and daughter-in-law, Kim Green Matney of Mount Airy.
Beloved grandmother of 10: Nicole Collins Reedy, Bobby Collins, Kevin Collins, Jody Ferro Masser, Joey Ferro, Justin Matney, Katelyn Matney, Gabrielle Matney Sanzone, Ricky Matney and Tanner Matney. She also leaves behind 14 cherished great-grandchildren: Samantha, Chad, Brooke, Martina, Kayli, Kyle, Kansas, Patrick, Presley, Cameron, Logan, Peyton, Carmen and Cash. She is survived by her sister, Mary Mensch Snyder of Milton, Pa., along with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
She graduated from St. Paul’s School of Nursing in 1950, where she obtained an L.P.N. nursing degree. Rose always liked a challenges. Among some of her various jobs, were driving a streetcar in Philadelphia, and having her own sewing shop where she custom tailored men’s suits and was commissioned by Bucknell University College in Lewisburg, to make all the drapes and bedspreads for the school. Later, she moved to Washington, D.C., and worked for the government, where she met her late husband, Robert Taylor Matney and married in 1952.
In 1953, Rose started the Wheaton Answering Service. She purchased the old Wheaton Ambulance Service Station building, converted a portion into leased office space and also ran her business from there, becoming the largest, single-owned answering service in Washington Metropolitan area, offering 24-hour, seven-days-a-week service. Later, she extended her business to include the Wheaton Placement Service, M&M Secretarial Service and Wheaton Tag and Title Company.
In 1964, she custom designed their family home in the Ashton Pond area, where they raised their four children.
In 1971, she started the Olney Answering Service and during the same year, she and her husband bought the Country Corner Inn in Olney, now the Olney Ale House) turning it into a family restaurant catering to the Olney, Sandy Spring community. In 1977, she built a second home on Marco Island, Fla., where they became part-time residents. She was a Florida Realtor, helped campaign and lobby for the Kennedy’s— even hosting political parties at her home. She was president of the Wheaton-Kensington Chamber of Commerce, the first woman ever to be elected president of a Chamber of Commerce.
Rose’s hobbies included: Playing bingo, poker, sewing, painting, traveling, baking and all types of crafts. She was extremely artistic and talented and had blue ribbons for her award winning, hand-made quilts. She loved spending time with her kids and grandkids and was always helping out on projects and teaching her grandkids crafts.
She will be missed by her many friends and family.
Funeral services were held Fri., Nov. 28, at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville.
Interment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
Gerald E. “Gerry” Hassinger
Gerald E. “Gerry” Hassinger, 64, of 2001 83rd Ave. N. Lot 1251, St. Petersburg, FL, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at Bay Pines VA Hospice, Bay Pines, FL.
He had lived in St. Petersburg, FL, since 2006. Previously, he lived in Mifflinburg, Lenexa, KS, St. Louis, MO, Downingtown and Selinsgrove.
He was born Nov. 30, 1945, in Lewisburg, a son of Ray W. Hassinger and the late A. Vivian (Mensch) Hassinger. He was married to the former Evelyn Ritter, who survives.
Gerald graduated from the Western Area Joint Senior High School, Mifflinburg, Class of 1963. He attended Elizabethtown College, Elizabethtown, PA, and McPherson College, McPherson, KS. Later, he served in the U. S. Air Force.
Gerry was last employed by Citi Finance in Selinsgrove.
He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kratzerville, the American Legion Post 957, New Berlin, the Sunbury Social Club, and Amvets Post 48, of De Soto, Mo.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his father, Ray, and his stepmother, Florence M. Hassinger, of Selinsgrove; his mother-in-law, Grace Ritter, of Shamokin Dam; two daughters, Tracy L. Hassinger and Allyssa H. Peanick, of De Soto, MO; three stepsons, Tony Leitzel, of Penn Twp, Snyder Co., James Leitzel, of Selinsgrove, and Curtis Leitzel, of Winfield; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Karl W. Hassinger of Rush Twp, Northumberland Co.; two sisters, Janette M. Georgetti, of Wilkes-Barre, and Susan H. Jows, of Forest Hill.
A graveside service was held Thurs., Dec. 22, at Bay Pines VA Cemetery, Bay Pines, FL.

A memorial service, to be held in central Pennsylvania during the summer of 2010, will be announced by the family at a later date.
