Miriam P. Herman
Miriam P. Herman, 84, of Market Street, passed away at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 2010, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg.
She was born Oct. 11, 1925, in Kelly Township, Union County, a daughter of the late Paul and Helen (Bingaman) Smith. On June 24, 1946, she married Henry I. Herman, who preceded her in death on April 15, 2008, after 62 years of marriage.
Miriam attended Mifflinburg High School.
he retired from Huntingdon Throwing Mills, Miffinburg, after 40 years of service.
She was a member of Dreisbach United Church of Christ, Lewisburg, where she was active in church functions. She was a former member of Lincoln Chapel United Methodist Church and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Mifflinburg. At. St. Paul’s, she was a member of the choir and served as a Sunday school teacher.
Miriam was a familiar figure in Mifflinburg, where she walked daily. She loved flower gardening, bird watching, music, plays and traveling, as well as puzzles and going to auctions. She volunteered with many of the civic organizations in Mifflinburg. Miriam was a very giving person whose extended family was the focus of her life.
She is survived by one son, Richard E. Herman, of Edgewater, N.J.; two sisters, Mary Sampsell and AnnaMae Shuck, both of Mifflinburg; two brothers, Guy Smith, of New Berlin, and Robert Smith, of Lewisburg; as well as nieces and nephews to whom she was very close.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Clair Smith.
Friends and family will be received from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thurs., July 29, at Dreisbach United Church of Christ, Lewisburg, followed by the funeral at 2 with the Rev. Michael C. Romig officiating.
Burial will be in the Hill Top section of the Mifflinburg Cemetery.

Valentine “Jim” Dorman
Valentine “Jim” Dorman, 69, of Troxelville Road, Middleburg passed away on Sunday, July 25, 2010, at the home of his sister, with whom he lived.
He was born Feb. 14, 1941, in Mifflinburg, a son of the late Dorothy A. Dorman and Walter Bingaman.
Jim attended Mifflinburg High School and served in the Air Force.
Much of his life was spent in Texas and Florida, where he was a heavy-equipment operator and truck driver.
He enjoyed tinkering with cars and fishing.
He is survived by one daughter, Angela; four sisters, Phyllis Trego, of Texas, Darlene Cranmer, of California, Gloria Weaver, of Selinsgrove, and Nora Shambach, of Middleburg; and two brothers, Walter Bingaman Jr., of Sunbury, and Steve Bingaman, of Milton.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Audrey and Dorothy, and two brothers, John and Roger Bingaman.
A graveside service was conducted Wed., July 28, in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Selinsgrove.
Arrangements were by the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg.
Martha J. Swartzlander
Martha J. Swartzlander, 85, of 304 JPM Road, Lewisburg passed away on Friday, July 23, 2010, at Kramm Healthcare Center, Milton.
She was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Lewisburg, a daughter of the late Luther and Laura (Long) Wagner. Her husband of 59 years, Carl Melvin Swartzlander, preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 2005.
Martha was a 1943 graduate of Lewisburg High School.
She was a lifetime member of Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewisburg.
Martha enjoyed playing bingo in her spare time, but her first priority was her devotion to her family and grandchildren.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-laws, Ronald C. and Kathleen Swartzlander, of Mifflinburg, and Dennis G. Swartzlander and Elaine Bower, of Montoursville; one daughter, Sharon S. Lewis, of Deptford, N.J.; one sister, Patricia Gessner, of Lewisburg; five grandchildren, Kyle and Kory Swartzlander, Christian and Michael Heinbach, and Teri Woodling; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by one son, Melvin W. Swartzlander who died in 1975; one granddaughter, Chelsey Swartzlander who died in 1986; two brothers, William and Walter Wagner; and one sister, Dorothy Harpster.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with her pastor, Rev. William S. Henderson, officiating.
Burial will follow in Lewisburg Cemetery.
The family welcomes flowers; however, if desired, memorial contributions may be made in Martha’s memory to Central Susquehanna Unit, American Cancer Society, 57 Reitz Blvd. Suite 102, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
Joanne Elizabeth Haney
Joanne Elizabeth Haney, 79, of Summerville, SC passed away on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at Summerville Medical Center.
She was born June 18, 1929, in New York City, a daughter of the late Julius St. Cyr Watson and Louisa (Braswell) Watson.
Joanne was a graduate of schools in Atlanta, Georgia.
She retired in November 2008, as an Administrative Assistant with Summerville Medical Center after 20 years of service.
Joanne was an active member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Summerville.
Through marriage, Mifflinburg became her home town and she had many friends and relatives there. Joanne was a loving daughter-in-law to the late Harry and Ethel Haney; a dear sister to Dotty and Don Seebold, Phyllis and Paul Heim, Bill and Janet Haney, and Harry and Joy Haney; and fond aunt to 13 nieces and nephews.
She enjoyed cooking, reading, and loved spending time with her family. Joanne lived a long, full life taking great pride in her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling. Her most recent trips were to China, The Holy Land, Egypt, Ireland, Scotland, and Italy.
Surviving are her children, Donna Leigh and her husband George Gozik, of Marriottsville, Md., Sherry and her husband Doyle Church, of Summerville, Jeanne Haney and her husband Chip Dox, of La Canada, Calif., Carlyn Smith, of Santa Barbara, Calif., Christopher and his wife Marilyn Haney, of Annapolis, Md., and Lise and her husband Carl Geller, of La Canada, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Her children agree that her greatest accomplishment was producing a family who loves one another and who are not merely siblings, but close friends.
Family and friends are welcome at 2 p.m. Fri., July 30, at the Mifflinburg Cemetery, to celebrate the life of Joanne, with Deacon Richard Owen, as celebrant.

Walter H. Mitchell, Jr.
Walter H. Mitchell Jr., 87, of 10210 State Route 304, Mifflinburg passed away on Tuesday evening, July 20, 2010, at his home.
He was born Sept. 23, 1922, in Penn Township, Snyder County, a son of the late Walter H. and Elsie M. (Kratzer) Mitchell. On April 21, 1946, he married the former Pauline M. Hoffer who survives.
Walter attended the Renninger school in rural Middleburg and was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Five Bronze Stars.
He had been employed by Beavertown Knitting, Selinsgrove, as well as working for various road construction contractors. He retired from Central Penn Wilbert Vault Co., Selinsgrove.
He was a life member of the Kratzerville Fire Co., a member of the New Berlin American Legion Post, and Heiser-Hoffman Post Veterans of Foreign Wars, Middleburg.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons and one daughter-in-law, Walter L. Mitchell, Richard E. Sr. and Cindy Mitchell, David S. Mitchell and Brian K. Mitchell, all of Mifflinburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Shelva J. and Clinton Cherry, of Millmont; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Fay Bowersox and Lois Haines, both of Middleburg, and Shirley Roush, of Kreamer.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Lawson Mitchell.
Funeral services were held Tues, July 25, at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg. The Rev. Wayne C. Muthler officiated.
Burial with military honors was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Kratzerville.
Dale Luther Weller
Dale Luther Weller, 79, of 4567 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg for 46 years, entered into rest at 5 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010, at his home.
He was born Sept. 29, 1930, in Mifflinburg, a son of the late Luther and Miriam (Brown) Weller. On March 8, 1963, in Lewisburg, he married the former Thelma F. Hummel, who survives.
Dale was employed for 30 years by Pennsylvania House, Lewisburg, retiring in 1992. Earlier in life, he worked in carpentry and masonry.
He was Lutheran.
Dale was a member of the Middleburg Veterans of Foreign Wars, Milton Loyal Order of Moose and New Berlin American Legion Post 957.
Dale enjoyed woodworking and making crafts at his home, gardening, fishing and hunting.
In addition to his wife of 47 years, he is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Roger and Paula Weller, of Utah, David and Cheryl Weller, of Millmont, Neil Weller and his companion, Mary Flowers, of Penns Creek, and Carl Weller, of Texas; four stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Carl and Dorothy Berge, of Winfield, Jerry and Donna Berge, of Kratzerville, Gary and Sue Berge, of Selinsgrove, and Richard and Sandy Berge, of Winfield; one stepdaughter, Connie Schreffler, of Winfield; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Donald Weller, Harold and Wanda Weller and Robert and Verna Weller, all of Mifflinburg; one sister, Pauline Mull, of North Carolina; 24 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Phyllis Weller.
Funeral services were held Mon., July 26, at the Roupp Funeral Home Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg. The Rev. Wayne Mutchler officiated.
Burial was in Lewisburg Cemetery.
Janet Elizabeth Botts
Janet Elizabeth Botts, 70, of 724 Swartz Road, Lewisburg since 1971, entered into rest at 9:31 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
She was born Feb. 8, 1940, in Lewisburg, a daughter of the late Ralph and Myrtle (Keeler) Courter. On Jan. 12, 1958, in Lewisburg, she married Donald E. Botts, who survives.
Janet was a 1956 graduate of Lewisburg Area High School.
She was employed for more than 20 years by Days Inn, Lewisburg, retiring in 2006.
Janet enjoyed going to yard sales, collecting carousels and snow globes and was a Dallas Cowboys fan. She could always be seen attending her son’s softball games and her grandson’s basketball games. Janet was proud of her granddaughter’s coming graduation from nursing school. Her family was what she lived for, and she enjoyed spending as much time with them as she could. Janet was a loving wife and mother and had enough love to go around as her family grew. She was truly the foundation of her small family.
In addition to her husband of 52 years, she is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Kathy Botts, of Mifflinburg; one granddaughter, Kristy Botts and her fiance, Jerry Starks, of Glen Iron; one grandson, Dustin Botts, of Mifflinburg; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Jane Courter and John and Linda Courter, all of Lewisburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Hendricks, and one niece, Julie Hendricks Bachman.
Funeral services were held Sun., July 25, at the Roupp Funeral Home Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg. The Rev. Wayne S. Krell officiated.
Burial was in Mazeppa Union Cemetery.

William Henry Long, Jr.
We are saddened by the passing of William Henry Long Jr., 86, on Saturday, July 17, 2010, following a courageous battle with cancer. At the time of his death, he was a resident at RiverWoods Assisted Living Facility, Lewisburg.
Bill was born at home in Swengel on June 8, 1924. He was raised in Swengel and Mifflinburg, the only son of William and Edna (Campbell) Long.
After graduating from Mifflinburg High School in 1942, he enlisted in the Army and proudly served this great nation. After World War II, he attended Lock Haven University, graduating in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He married his beautiful sweetheart, Kathryn Jean Knepshield, in 1948. His loving wife of 50 years was his best friend, selfless caretaker and favorite chef. She predeceased him in April 1998.
His career with the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons, began in 1949. He and his family traveled throughout the United States while he worked at various maximum- and minimum-security prisons. He served in Lewisburg, Alcatraz Island, San Francisco, Eglin Air Force Base, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and then returned to the Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary, from where he retired in 1976.
He was very active in the Alcatraz Historical Society. His photography is published in more than 20 books dedicated to life on Alcatraz Island. He was featured several times on television shows, most notably “America’s Most Wanted” and “Unsolved Mysteries.” He returned to Alcatraz Island yearly as a guest lecturer of the National Park Service. Over the years, thousands of people attended his seminars. His lively and colorful storytelling was a favorite part of the living history portion of the Alcatraz reunions.
For 60 years, he was a member of Mifflinburg Lodge 370, Free & Accepted Masons.
An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Shade Mountain Country Club, Middleburg. Weather permitting, he played several times weekly with his favorite foursome.
He leaves his devoted family, William Robert and Kay Long, of New Columbia, Pamela and Mike Warren, of Charlotte, N.C., Michael Patrick McGrath, of Springfield, Va., and Molly Jean McGrath, of Pensacola, Fla., the terrific staff at RiverWoods and many wonderful lifetime friends.
A celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, at the Watson Inn, Watsontown. The family asks you to bring your stories, bring your pictures and leave your sorrow.
