Dr. Robert Weirich Leipold
Dr. Robert Weirich Leipold, 85, a devoted family man, dedicated healer and avid outdoorsman, passed away on Friday, June 18, 2010.
He was born Nov. 10, 1924, in Sunbury, the only child of Hobert and Reba Weirich Leipold. He grew up in Mount Union, Huntingdon County, where he played in the high school and Pennsylvania Railroad bands acquiring his lifelong love of music.
After attending Juniata College for one year, he joined the Army after the start of World War II and initially served in the Signal Corps. He was reassigned to attend medical school at the University of California, Berkley, in 1943 as the army prepared for a prolonged war including the anticipated invasion of Japan.
He married his lifelong partner, Edna Henstridge, on Dec 28, 1946. Following graduation from medical school in 1948, the couple returned to Pennsylvania where Dr. Leipold served his internship and residency at Allentown Hospital.
In 1950, the Leipolds settled in McClure, Snyder County, where Dr. Leipold established his medical practice and served on the staff of Lewistown Hospital. The Leipolds raised their sons and the family members were active in the community. As time permitted, “Doc” as he was familiarly known, indulged his love of the outdoors by hunting and fishing with his sons and several buddies who remained lifelong friends.
In 1973, the Leipolds moved to Danville, Montour County, where Dr. Leipold became Director of Family Medicine at Geisinger Medical Center. He was involved in the establishment of the Geisinger Health Plan, an early HMO program, and was instrumental in the accreditation and operation of the family practice residency program. The latter gave him the opportunity to share his wealth of knowledge and experience with the young doctors and was among his most rewarding professional experiences.
After retiring in 1986, Dr. Leipold had more time to enjoy the outdoor beauty of central Pennsylvania with his wife and family. Many happy days were spent at their cabin along Penns Creek near Weikert, Union County. Morning walks to check the rise at the Blue Rock Hole or a hike to the old railroad trestle were favorite activities. The Leipolds enjoyed an active retirement as long as their health permitted.
The Leipolds moved to RiverWoods retirement community in Lewisburg in 2008. Despite declining health, the couple remained as loving and devoted to each other as ever and were featured as “Valentines for 63 Years” in a Standard-Journal article earlier this year.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Edna, of Lewisburg; three sons and daughters-in-law, William, and Lynne, of Enosburg Falls, Vt.; Robert, and Patricia, of Wolfeboro Falls, N.H., and Thomas, and Carol, of Catawissa; four granddaughters and three great-grandchildren, Susan and Michael Johnson and children, Mikayla and Justin, of Claremont, N.H., Laura and Andre Human, of Clover, S.C.; Jennifer and Terry Fisher and daughter, Mackenna, of Raymond, NH; and Katherine Leipold and fiancé, Jay Warren, of Berwick, Maine.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Raymond B. Winter Chapter of Trout Unlimited, c/o Bob Laubach, 1535 Green Ridge Road, Mifflinburg, PA 17884, or to the Geisinger Health System Foundation, 100 N. Academy Ave., Danville, PA 17822 M.C. 40-00.
