Katherine R. “Kay” Roush
Katherine R. “Kay” Roush, 90, formerly of 257 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg entered into eternal rest at 6:25 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at Rolling Hills Manor where she had been a resident since Nov. 3, 2003.
She was born June 18, 1917, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Guy F. and Mary (Piper Gast) Roush.
Kay was a 1935 graduate from Mifflinburg High School.
Kay was employed as a sales clerk at Mary Koons Shop in Mifflinburg for many years. She owned and operated “Wash Tubs” coin operated laundromat in the Buffalo Valley Shopping Center, Mifflinburg, for many years.
She was a lifetime member of Saint John’s United Church of Christ in Mifflinburg, were she served as a church council member for several terms.
Kay was one of the Mifflinburg citizens first introduced to the historic Heiss Buggy Shop on Quarry Road and Sixth Street by Owen Heiss. This initial visit prompted the founding of the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum Complex, Green and Sixth streets. She was a charter member from May 1978, and over twenty-year board member of the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum. She later was named Emeritus Member of the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum Board.
Kay was one of the founding members and twenty-two year member of the Mifflinburg Shade Tree Commission, a 50-year former member of the Mifflinburg Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 152, member of Athenaeum Club, Mifflinburg, a Charter member of Union County Historical Society, a member of Merrill W. Linn Land and Water Conservancy, Lewisburg, former member of Civic Club of Mifflinburg, and former member of Mifflinburg Bicentennial Planning Committee.
She enjoyed attending her high school class luncheons, tending her rose bed flower garden, bird watching and fishing. Kay took pleasure in nature and wildlife, and generously donated to several local and national environmental organizations. She also enjoyed catering to her beagles, Phoebe I and II, visiting Mary’s Penn’s Creek cottage, and tinkering with all things, mechanical and electrical.
Miss Roush is survived by her companion, Mary E. Koons, RiverWoods, Lewisburg; a niece, R. Ann wife of Melvin A. Fulmer of Mifflinburg; grandniece, Brenda L. Fulmer of Mifflinburg; grandnephew, Barry L. Fulmer of New Albany, Ind.; Mary Koons’ extended family, Mary Ann Williard, Bill Koons, Betsy Robertson, all of Mifflinburg.
Helen M. “Peg” Shingara
Helen M. “Peg” Kramer Shingara, 73, entered into rest at 12:07 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2008.
She was born Dec. 9, 1934, in Reading, a daughter of the late Harry and Frances (Malone) Isenberg.
She is survived by Debra and Everett Harris of Suffolk, Va., Linda and Roy Beck of Selinsgrove, Patricia and Jim Brosius of Frederick, Md., Diana and Jurgen Williams of Sunbury, Karen Kramer of Shamokin Dam; one stepson and spouse, Grey and Danielle Shingara of Mifflinburg; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Harriet Hoover, Ann and Bob Doebler, Richard and Judy Isenberg, Thomas and Ann Isenberg, James and Mary Isenberg and Myke Isenberg; and many nieces and nephews.
Respecting Helen’s wishes, there will be no viewing. A private graveside service will be held at the discretion of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s memory to the Sunbury Community Hospital, Sunbury, PA 17801.
Arrangements were made by the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury.
Martin C. Miller
Martin C. Miller, 89, of Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Fairground Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at home.
Marty was born March 6, 1918, in New York City, the only son of the late Jack and Rachel (Holtzman) Miller. His wife of 29 years, the former Deborah Lisker, died Jan. 27, 1968. They were married in New York City on Oct. 29, 1938.
Marty was a lifelong resident of New York City, moving to Lewisburg in 2003 from Manhattan, where he lived near the South Street Seaport. On Sept. 11, 2001, he was home when the World Trade Center collapsed as the result of the terrorist attack five blocks from his apartment.
After attending Wagner College and the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, he graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in chemistry. Marty was associated with the chemical and pigment industry throughout his working life.
During World War II, he did analytical research for the Navy Shipyard. Previously, he worked for Ansbacher-Siegle as a research chemist. In a sales capacity, he worked for Landers Segal Color Co. and Podell Industries of Saddlebrook, N.J. In 1969, he was promoted to vice president of sales with responsibility for all domestic and international sales of colors to the paint, plastic, ink and associated industries. He retired from R.A. Chemical Co.
During his career, he served as president of the New York Pigment Club, vice chairman of the management trainee group of the New York Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association and was a member of the Society of Plastic Engineers, the New York Society of Paint Technology and the New York Rubber Group. He was the principal technical speaker at the Society of the Plastic Industry on the subject, “Designing a Color Dispersion for Plastisols.”
Marty had many interests and hobbies, which he shared with his family and friends. He was an avid golfer and accomplished folk dancer. He taught Greek folk dancing and was a member of a Scottish folk dance group. At a young age, Marty won an amateur tap dancing award, to the surprise of his mother. He also enjoyed the opera, theater, the New York Times crossword puzzles, model building, swimming, ice skating and reading. Later in life, he developed a love of astronomy, taking many courses at the New York City Hayden Planetarium. “My only regret is that I didn't become an astronomer.”
He spent the last four years in Lewisburg at RhodesMere Assisted Living. A hot dog and french fries at the Farmers Market made his day.
Marty was a loving husband and beloved proud father and grandfather. He had unconditional love for his family and especially enjoyed the time spent with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by a daughter, Barbara M. Stokes of Torrance, California; a son, Dr. Steven C. Miller and his wife, Ellen M. Gauthier, of Lewisburg; three grandchildren, Lindsay Miller of Elyria, Ohio, and Daniel and Megan Stokes, both of Torrance; a sister, Florence Phillips and her husband, David, of Rochester, New York; three nephews, Charles and Alan Phillips, both of Rochester, and Leonard Sharenow of Santa Monica, California; and a niece, Janet Albert of Westport, Connecticut.
He was predeceased by a son-in-law, William S. Stokes on June 23, 2001 and a nephew, Harold Phillips on April 13, 2004.
A memorial service was held Sat., March 1, at the Village Common, Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, 6 Tressler Blvd., Lewisburg. It was officiated by Rabbi Nina Mandel of Congregation Beth El, Sunbury. Burial was at the convenience of the family in Mt. Ararat Cemetery on Long Island, New York.
In accordance with Jewish tradition, there will be no flowers. If desired, contributions in Marty’s memory may be made to the RhodesMere Benevolent Care Fund, Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, 945 Fairground Rd., Lewisburg, PA 17837.

Albert Jay Hartman
Albert Jay Hartman, 80, of 609 Nagle St. for the past 18 years, formerly of Route 192, Buffalo Township, entered into rest at 12:37 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
He was born Jan. 5, 1928, in Cowan, a son of the late Charles and Edna (Walter) Hartman. On Sept. 15, 1948, in the Buffalo Valley Parsonage in Mazeppa, he married the former Catherine Elizabeth Erb. She preceded him in death on Aug. 17, 2005.
Mr. Hartman honorably served in the Navy during World War II.
Earlier in life, Mr. Hartman was employed at Philco, Watsontown. He then worked at Bucknell University, where he was the equipment manager for the football team. Mr. Hartman worked for the Lewisburg Area School District for more than 15 years before he retired.
He was an active and faithful charter member of Hillside Bible Church, Mifflinburg.
He was a sports fan and enjoyed watching Penn State football, Duke basketball and the Philadelphia Phillies.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert B. and Barbara A. Hartman and Ronald L. Sr. and S. Hope Hartman, all of Mifflinburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce A. and Gordon L. Oberdorf of New Berlin; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Albert J. Hartman Jr., and five brothers, Marlin, Brian, Walter, Ralph and Charles.
Funeral services were held Mon., March 3, at the Roupp Funeral Home Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg. The Rev. Ned L. Knisely officiated.
Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Anna Amelia Wehr
Anna Amelia Zeigler Wehr, 85, of 7768 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg a lifelong resident of Buffalo Township, entered into rest at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. She had been a resident of Kramm Healthcare, Milton, for the past three years.
She was born March 29, 1922, in Kelly Township, a daughter of the late John Stuart and Mary Catherine (Winklebleck) Zeigler. On Aug. 28, 1940, she married John F. Wehr, who preceded her in death Oct. 15, 1988.
Anna was a 1939 graduate of Lewisburg High School.
She assisted her husband with the operation of the Wehr Dairy Farm, Buffalo Township. Earlier in life, Anna worked at Wehr’s Dairy Store.
Anna was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Mifflinburg, for more than 60 years.
She was a 50-year former member of the Mifflinburg Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 152. Anna was active in the Vicksburg Community Center, Pennsylvania Grange and Union County 4-H Club and was a Sunday school teacher earlier in life.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Allen Z. and Linda M. Wehr of Mifflinburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Bonita R. and Harlan E. Kile of Bloomsburg; one sister and brother-in-law, Joyce E. and Kenneth Keefer of Lewisburg; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruth E. Zeigler, Helen C. Morris-Folk and Edith M. Feaster.
The funeral was conducted Mon., March 3, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 417 Market St., Mifflinburg. It was officiated by the Rev. Susan Gabbard.
Burial was in Mifflinburg Cemetery.

Ruth L. Auman
Ruth L. Auman, 72, of Ridge Road, Point Township, passed away at 9:32 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
She was born March 4, 1935, in Point Township, a daughter of the late Eugene L. and Sarah A. (Bollinger) Cannon. On Feb. 7, 1959, she married Richard D. Auman, who survives.
Ruth was a 1953 graduate of Mifflinburg High School.
She later worked for Mifflinburg Silk Mill and then for Furman’s Cannery in Northumberland for several years before devoting herself to her children full time.
She was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Donald J. and Lisa M. Auman of Mifflinburg, and Daniel E. Auman of Beavertown; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra L. and Roy E. Nagle of Youngstown, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Kelly S. Auman; nine grandchildren, Teresa, Amy, Jessica, Jamie, Matthew, Chad, Tiffany, Alicia, and Brad; three great-grandchildren, Trevor, Eleanor Joann, and Tyler; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Eleanor Cannon, of Milton; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Tessie and Charles Weidman of Bloomsburg, Cora and Gilbert Galbraith of Sunbury, and Gladys and Joe Veley of Mifflinburg.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori A. Auman, and a brother, John Cannon.
A Christian Wake Service was held Thurs., Feb. 28, at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland. Father William T. Haviland officiated.
Burial was in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
Verna C. Hackenburg
Verna C. Hackenburg, 89, of Richard Road, Penns Creek passed away early Tuesday morning, Feb. 26, 2008, at her home.
She was born Jan. 22, 1919, in New York, a daughter of the late Jacob and Olive (Brenner) Hackenburg.
Verna was a member of Calvary Chapel, Millmont.
She enjoyed doing word searches and puzzles and making pot holders.
Surviving is a sister, Viola Hackenburg, a resident of Rolling Hills Manor, Millmont.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
Funeral services were held Thurs., Feb. 28, at Calvary Chapel, 930 Orchard Road, Millmont. The Rev. Jeffrey A. West officiated.
Burial was in Hartleton Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg.
A. Izetta Kratzer
A. Izetta Kratzer, 78, of Mifflinburg, went to be with her Lord at 6:09 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, where she had been a patient since Sunday.
She was born July 17, 1929, in McVeytown, a daughter of the late Daniel and Ruth (Bratton) Moist.
She graduated from the former McVeytown Oliver High School in 1948.
Izetta worked on the farm and was a homemaker, and earlier in life, she worked at the former Woolworths, Lewistown.
She was a member of Mifflinburg Assembly of God Church, where she had been active serving funeral meals and in other church activities. Earlier in life, she was a member of Baker’s United Methodist Church, McClure, where she sang in the choir.
Izetta enjoyed attending her grandson’s school and music events, church spiritual enrichment days and Aglow Fellowship meetings.
Izetta loved crocheting and crocheted many baby afghans and Penn State afghans for relatives and others for family. She also loved to volunteer at RiverWoods, starting there in 1976 with a church sewing group and continuing through last October helping in the laundry. She was known for sending many cards to relatives and friends, recognizing birthdays and special events.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy J. “Jeannie” Fluharty and her husband Ralph E., of Mifflinburg; a grandson, Ryan Fluharty; several cousins; and her aunt, Dorothy Cromwell.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Moist and Raymond Kratzer.
Funeral services were held Fri., Feb. 29, at Aurand Funeral Home, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown. Pastor David Benjo officiated. Burial was in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown.
