Beatrice Anthony Strunk
Beatrice Anthony Strunk, 83, of Bethlehem, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 in St. Lukes Hospital.
Born December 2, 1924 in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Vivian and Beatrice Sophia (Aubrey) Anthony. She was married to Dr. William M. Strunk for 62 years.
Beatrice was a graduate of Bucknell Junior College.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three children, Dr. William M. Strunk II of Knoxville, Iowa, Margaret E. Finger of Marlton, N.J. and Gwendolyn M. Hamilton of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; several grandchildren and spouses; great-grandchildren and spouses. Also surviving are a sister, Margaret Elizabeth Widdall of York; brother, Dr. John A. Anthony of Pottstown.
Services were held Sat., May 3, at the Shaw Funeral Home, 801 Market St., Lewisburg. The Rev. Susan L. Gabbard officiated.
Burial was in Mifflinburg Cemetery.

Jack W. Huffer
Jack W. Huffer, 76, of 1915 Dietrich Road, Mifflinburg passed away at 1:30 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2008, at his home.
He was born July 19, 1931, in Hilton, N.Y., a son of the late Albert E. and Doris K. (Gemming) Huffer. On March 24, 1979, he married the former Betty Jean Straub, who survives. The couple lived in New York until moving to Dietrich Road in 1993.
Mr. Huffer had been employed at Duffy Motts, Kodak, Lakeland Concrete and retired after 21 years with J.P. Halpons and Son, all of New York. After his retirement, he was employed part-time in maintenance at the Raymond B. Winter State Park.
He enjoyed constructing models, mowing his grass, fishing, camping and anything to do with the outdoors. The great joys of his life were his grandchildren.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, Rick Eugene Huffer and his fianceé Michelle of New Berlin; two daughters, Ann Marie Reich and her companion Lewis Kappes of Stroudsburg and Donna Kutruff of New York; four grandchildren, Skye, Paige, Teresa and Bobbi Jo; three stepgrandchildren, Jessie, Eddie and Eric; two great-grandchildren, Mya and Kiley; one sister, Margaret Ann Bennett of New York; and three brothers, Ronald, Robert and George Huffer, all of New York.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Benjamin Whitney Reich, and a brother, Richard Huffer.
Visitors may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg, where the funeral will be conducted at 2 with the Rev. Alan K. Walter officiating.
Burial will be in Troxelville Union Cemetery.

Norman D. Kouf
Norman D. Kouf, 86, of 174 Baker Hollow Road, Mifflinburg entered into rest, surrounded by his family, at 3:56 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2008, at his home.
He was born July 26, 1921, in Ithaca, N.Y., a son of the late Norman V. and Emma (Hoffman) Kouf. On Aug. 30, 1941, in Enfield Center, N.Y., he married the former Esther M. McFall, who survives with 66 years of wonderful memories of their life together.
Mr. Kouf enlisted in the Army on March 21, 1945, and served until his honorable discharge on Dec. 7, 1946.
He worked as the service manager at Agway, Lewisburg, retiring in 1984.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, Melvin D. Kouf of Flemington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce M. and James Harding of Beaver Springs and Janice E. and Jeffrey Killian of New Columbia; one brother and sister-in-law, David E. and Cil Kouf of Lansing, N.Y.; one sister, Lorraine Goodman of Ithaca, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Winefred Frankenstien, Francis Beach and Vivian Quakenbush.
Private services will be at the family’s convenience.
Contributions in Norman's memory may be sent to a local hospice.

Ammon J. Loss
Ammon J. Loss, 81, of Kepler Nursing Home, Elizabethville since Dec. 4, formerly of Hartleton, entered into rest at 4:20 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2008, at the nursing home.
He was born March 16, 1927, the son of the late Elmer Loss. He was married to the former Geraldine Feese, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Loss retired from Bucknell University after working many years in the maintenance department. He also owned and operated a garbage disposal business.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are two daughters, Ruth Shemory and Sylvia Long; two stepsons, David Frederick and Mark Loss; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his wife, was a daughter, Patricia Hanselman.
A memorial graveside service was conducted Wednesday, May 7, in Hartleton Cemetery, Route 45, by Pastor Henry Dorman.
Funeral arrangements were by the Roupp Funeral Home Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg.
Ray Harold Doan, Jr.
Ray Harold Doan, Jr., 49, of 3300 Creek Road., Millmont entered into rest unexpectedly, Friday, May 2, 2008, due to injuries sustained in a work related accident.
He was born Sept. 17, 1958, in Coatesville, a son of Alice (Riley) Doan of Atglen, and the late Ray H. Doan, Sr. On Oct. 13, 1984, in Coatesville, he married the former Debra J. Lake, who survives.
Ray was employed at Advanced Concrete, Middleburg, for the past three years. He worked as a stone mason his entire working career.
He was a member of the Union County Sportsmens Club, and previously a member of the West End Fire Company.
Ray enjoyed hunting, was a NASCAR and Dallas Cowboy fan, and loved his dog, Jed.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother, are two sons, Brandon E. Doan of Millmont, and Josh Doan of Philadelphia; two brothers, Donnie Doan of Exton, and Stevie Doan of Atglen; and three sisters, Alice Ann Mayer of Monroe, N.C., Karen Doan of Atglen, and Barbie Doan of Downingtown.
Visitors may call from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at the Christ’s United Lutheran Church, 13765 Old Turnpike Road., Millmont, where the funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. with Rev. John D. Yost, officiating.

Mary L. Hosier Long
Mary L. Hosier Long, 83, passed away at 10:05 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2008, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg, where she had resided for the past year. She formerly resided in Outlook Pointe, Lewisburg, and before that was a resident of Mifflinburg.
She was born March 22, 1925, in Bolivar, N.Y., a daughter of the late Ralph Joseph and Gladys (Garthwait) Blauvelt. She was married to John Ralph Hosier of Tennessee and later married Harry R. Long who preceded her in death Feb. 19, 2007.
She was a graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College in New York.
Mary did private duty nursing and also had provided childcare in her home. She was a foster mother for many children. She retired from the Selinsgrove Center, Selinsgrove, where she was a patient care aide.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Mifflinburg, and had formerly attended God’s Missionary Church, Millmont.
Mary enjoyed crocheting and loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mary was an extremely creative and resourceful person who enjoyed helping and giving to others.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Joanne and William Womer of Salisbury, N.C., Joy Kline of Lewisburg, and Joyce and Rev. David Walter of Portage; one son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Rachel Engel of Hobe Sound, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four stepchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Luther, in infancy; one granddaughter, Bethany Kline; son-in-law, Edward Kline; and one sister, Beatrice Heitman.
Funeral services were held Wed., May 12, at the Buffalo Mennonite Church, 4445 Hoffa Mill Rd., Lewisburg. Her grandson, the Rev. Nathan Walter, and her pastor, the Rev. Shawn McLain officiated.
Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.
Arrangements were the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg.
Harold W. Brouse
Harold W. Brouse, 92, of Chestnut Place, Lewisburg died Monday, April 28, 2008, at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village.
He was born Aug. 30, 1915, in Limestone Township, Union County, a son of the late Wesley and Caroline (Shannon) Brouse. On June 27, 1937, he married the former Carrie E. Narehood of Troxelville, who survives.
Harold graduated from Mifflinburg High School in 1933, after which he began working as a highway laborer. He later worked at Pennsylvania House Furniture, Lewisburg, from 1940 until his retirement in 1979.
He joined Vicksburg Reformed Church in 1931, then in 1941 transferred his membership to St. John's United Church of Christ, Third Street, Lewisburg. He had a great interest in the building of the new St. John's United Church of Christ, Buffalo Road, Lewisburg, where he devoted hours to wood finishing. He was a member of the church consistory, served as deacon and elder and did ground maintenance.
Harold was a member of AARP, Lewisburg, and a former member of the Ramblers Club, with which he enjoyed taking bus trips.
He was fond of cars and in his spare time enjoyed washing and waxing them.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 70 years, are two brothers, Kenneth Brouse of Geneva, N.Y., and Marlyn Brouse of Lewisburg; a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Richard Mabus Sr. of Lewisburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thurs., May 1, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1050 Buffalo Rd., Lewisburg. His pastor, the Rev. Paula M. Gustafson, officiated.
Burial followed in Lewisburg Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1050 Buffalo Road, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
The family was assisted by the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg.
