Laura E. Rishel
Laura E. Rishel, 97, of Belleville, passed away at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at Lewistown Hospital.
She was born Jan. 10, 1914, in Altoona, a daughter of the late George W. and Ruth Ann (Wilson) Bilger. She was married to George C. Kauffman Sr., who preceded her in death on April 19, 1975. She then married Allen E. Rishel, who preceded her in death on March 9.
Laura attended nursing school at the Danville hospital for 1½ years.
She retired from Union Elementary School, where she worked as a custodian for a number of years.
She was a member of Reedsville United Methodist Church.
Laura enjoyed traveling and camping and had visited all 50 states. She was a very loving Mammy.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, George C. “Shobe” Jr. and Betty Kauffman, of Belleville, and John A. and Shirley Kauffman; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ruth and Norman “Archie” Wagner, of Milroy; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Caroline Wenrick, of Hartleton; two brothers-in-law, Arthur W. Kauffman, of Belleville, and Robert Knorr, of Mifflinburg; two sisters-in-law, Goldie W. Kauffman, of Mifflintown, and Ethel Bilger, of Mifflinburg; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were held Fri., Nov. 18, at the Henderson Funeral Home, Belleville. Gwen Hornberger officiated.
Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Belleville.
Should friends desire, donations may be made in Laura’s memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.
David C. Grove Jr.
David C. Grove Jr., 23, of Eighth Street, Sunbury passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011.
He was born Dec. 25, 1987, in Danville, a son of David C. Grove, of Mifflinburg, and Denise A. and Ricardo L. Williams, of Sunbury.
He attended Shikellamy High School with the Class of 2006.
At the time of his passing, David was employed by Strong Industries, Northumberland.
David was an avid sports fan. He especially enjoyed golfing with his dad, brother and friends and shooting pool with a league in Sunbury. He always looked forward to spending time at the beach because of his fondness for the ocean. David will always be remembered as a talented artist and for his love of drawing.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Zachery M. Grove, of Sunbury; maternal grandfather, Lawrence P. Williams, of Northumberland; paternal grandmother, Violet J. Grove, of Sunbury; two stepsisters, Chantile and Rumiko Williams, of Sunbury; his companion, Bridget Temple, of Sunbury; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Vivian L. Williams, and his paternal grandfather, Glenn M. Grove.
Funeral services were held Fri., Nov, 18, at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland.
The family asks donations in David’s memory be made to the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland, PA 17857, to help defray funeral expenses.
Catherine W. “Kitty” Bowe
Catherine W. “Kitty” Bowe, 89, of 204 Alder Lane, Lewisburg passed away on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011.
She was born July 29, 1922, at the home of her parents, a daughter of the late Atty. William T. “Red” Windsor and Catherine (Heinen) Windsor in Milton. On March 27, 1943, she married Frank G. Bowe at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death at their home at 150 Brown St., Lewisburg on April 21, 1982.
Kitty was a 1940 graduate of Milton High School and attended Bucknell University.
During World War II, Kitty began a journalistic career as a reporter for the Milton Evening Standard and later she initiated a newsletter called, “What’s Cookin?” for the Chef Boyardee Plant in Milton. In 1970, having held several secretarial jobs, she began working in the newsroom of the The Daily Item in Sunbury. That year, she began the weekly column, “Some Daily Items” by Kitty Bowe, which appeared every Saturday on the editorial page. A highlight of her career occurred in 1977 when she placed second for a column entitled, “Thou Shalt Not Steal”, in the annual Keystone Press Awards contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association. The column was a humorous tale about a dead cat and its surprised owner. Before retiring from the Daily Item in 1982 after the death of her husband, Kitty was manager of the Union County office of the paper in Lewisburg and continued to write feature articles.
She was a member of the Lewisburg First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Robin Bowe Schaffer and her husband, Jerry J. Schaffer, of Athens, Ohio; her son’s widow, Phyllis Bowe, of Lawrence, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Kathryn Schaffer, of Chicago, Ill., Doran Bowe, of Philadelphia, Whitney Bowe Auerbach, of New York, and Jeremy Schaffer, of Athens, Ohio. In addition; one sister and brother-in-law, Victoria and Peter Harrison, of Hinsdale, Mass.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Ann Windsor, of Media, and Henry and Charlotte Windsor, of Suffield, Conn.; and her dear friend, Carol Vargas, of Lewisburg.
She was preceded in death by her son, Frank Bowe Jr., who died Aug. 21, 2007.
Services were held Tues., Nov. 22, at the First Baptist Church, 51 S. Third St., Lewisburg. Pastor Scott officiated.
Interment followed in Harmony Cemetery, Milton.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to The Dale E. Ranck Funeral Service, Inc., 125 N. Front St., Milton.
Ethel Mae Keister
Ethel Mae Keister, 92, 5 Barton Street, Lewisburg passed away at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at the Kramm Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Milton, where she resided for nine years. She resided in Lewisburg since the late 1940s.
She was born May 23, 1919, in Scranton, a daughter of the late Louis and Ethel (Williamson) Diem. She was married to Walter S. Keister who preceded her in death in 1986.
She was a graduate of Scranton High School and the former Mansfield State Teachers College.
Ethel Mae was employed by the former Laurelton State School for many years as a dietician. Following her retirement, she stayed active by engaging in the antique business with her sons, Bill and Lewis in Lewisburg.
She was a longtime member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewisburg.
She is survived by seven children, Walter Keister, Marylou Keister, Robert Keister, Linda Keister, William Keister, Lewis F. Keister and Ethel Ann Keister; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Snyder, and one grandson, Michael Nicewinder.
A memorial service was be conducted Wed., Nov. 23, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 S. Third St., Lewisburg. Her pastor, the Rev. William S. Henderson officiated.
Memorials in Ethel Mae’s memory may be made to Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church.
In keeping with her wishes, her body has been donated to Humanity Gifts Registry and transported to the Community Medical College of Pennsylvania in Scranton to be used for anatomical studies.
Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg.
