Eugene L. “Gene” Sawyer
    Eugene L. “Gene” Sawyer, 83, of 195 Scottsdale Drive, Mifflinburg formerly of Bentley Creek, Pa., and Melbourne, Fla., pas-sed away on Monday, Aug. 30, 2010.
    He was born March 18, 1927, in Bodines, a son of the late Harry Clayton and Lenna (Condon) Sawyer. Gene was married to the former Laura Jeannette “Jeannie” Comfort, who survives. They were married on July 31, 1948, in Southport.
    After attending Canton High School, Gene served honorably in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Winooskie.
    He was employed by Remington Rand before starting his career as a third-generation family member with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He also worked for Dalrymple Construction Co. before moving to Melbourne, where he retired from the Brevard County Department of Roads and Bridges.
    He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mifflinburg, where he served as a volunteer for Group Workcamps and supported the missions program. Gene was active in the Ridgebury Volunteer Fire Company, Bentley Creek, and served as a Boy Scout leader, a Little League umpire and as a justice of the peace.
    Gene will be remembered for being able to fix or repair anything, enjoying swimming, hunting, fishing, wrestling and bowling, eyeing up the corner pieces of the cakes and brownies, hiding candy from Jeannie and snuggling with his dogs, Heidi and Holly.
    In addition to his wife of 62 years, Gene is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Kimberley Sawyer, of Mifflinburg; five grandchildren and their spouses, Nikoya and Bret Reiswig, of Freeport, Fla., Michelle and Mark Tovey, of Sunbury, Russell and Jennifer Sawyer and Joshua Sawyer, all of Mifflinburg, and Nicole and Clayton Gessner, of Virginia Beach; four great-grandchildren, Scotty Reiswig, Alexis Sawyer and Keaton and Kylee Tovey; three sisters-in-law, Helen Sawyer and Elsie Grover, both of Elmira, N.Y., and Roberta Riggan, of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by one son, Glenn Merrill Sawyer; one brother, Robert “Bob” Sawyer; and one sister, Dorothy Sarro.
    Memorial services to celebrate Gene’s life were held Wed., Sept. 1, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 404 Market St., Mifflinburg. The Rev. James Rill officiated.
    Memorial contributions may be made in Gene’s memory to First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 404 Market St., Mifflinburg, PA 17844, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
    Funeral arrangements were by the Roupp Funeral Home Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road. Mifflinburg.

George Franklin Matters
    George Franklin Matters, 82, of 637 Market St., New Berlin since 1944, entered into rest at 12:54 p.m. Monday, Aug.30, 2010, at his home.
    He was born Sept. 26, 1927, in Limestone Township, a son of the late John J. and Carrie M. (Ramer) Matters.
    George was employed as a foreman at the Rosedale Dairy, New Berlin, for more than 20 years. Throughout his working years, he also was employed at Q-E Manufacturing, New Berlin, and Pennsylvania House, Lewisburg.
    Surviving are three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Chester A. Matters, of Watsontown, Truman R. and Helen G. Matters, of Mifflinburg, and Lewis A. and Jean Matters, of Navarre, Fla.
    He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard and Clayton Matters, and two sisters, Gertrude Maize and Goldie Hackenburg.
    Funeral services will be conducted privately at the convenience of the family.
    Arrangements are by the Roupp Funeral Home Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg.

Mark A. Betz
    Mark A. Betz, 48, of Mifflinburg, passed away Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 at home.
    He was born May 21, 1962 in Bloomsburg, a son of Miles M. Betz Sr. and the late Florence Omen Betz. He was married to the former Vera K. Heimbach, who survives.
    Mark was employed by Penn Fire Protection, Selinsgrove.
    He enjoyed hunting, fishing and just being outdoors, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren. He also would spend countless hours tinkering in his garage.
He is survived by his wife, Vera; his father Miles, and step-mother, Elenore Betz, of Exchange; a daughter, Amanda M. and husband Lonnie Reigle, of Mifflinburg; and two sons, Adam Heimbach and Mark Betz, both of Mifflinburg; six grandchildren, Lonnie, Rebecca, Katlyn, Davidson, Keturah and Maria. Also surviving are two sisters, Louann Lebarron, of Muncy, Lucinda Aikey, of Middleburg, and a brother, Miles Betz, of Muncy.
    In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Follmer.
    A celebration of Mark’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 at the family home, 337 Gast Road, Mifflinburg.
    Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Geisinger Hospice, 100 N. Academy Ave., Danville, PA 17822.

Gloria Jean Wenrick
    Gloria Jean Wenrick, 68, of 1850 Route 235, Laurelton for the past 45 years, entered into rest at 8:44 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, at Geisinger Medical Center, Dan-ville.
    She was born Jan. 19, 1942, in Lewisburg, a daughter of the late William E. and Frieda M. (Kline) Chappell. On Sept. 28, 1963, in Laurelton, she married Leroy C. Wenrick Sr., who survives.
    Gloria was a 1960 graduate of Mifflinburg Area High School.
    She was employed as a teacher’s aide at First Independent Bible Baptist School and Hillside Christian Academy, both of Mifflinburg. Earlier in life, she was employed at the Laurelton Center.
    In addition to her husband of nearly 47 years, she is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Leroy C. Jr. and Margaret Anne Wenrick, of Loveland, Colo., Corey Joe and Donna Wenrick, of Lewisburg, and Elon J. and Stephanie Wenrick, of Beaufort, S.C.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Trina and Terry Shambach, of Middleburg, Jeri and Brad Moll, of Mount Pleasant Mills, Patti and Jeffrey Carson, of Longview, Texas, and Grace and Tyrone Jackson, of Longview, Texas; two brothers and one sister-in-law, William Jr. and Judy Chappell, of Scranton, and John Chappell, of Lock Haven; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Betty and John Brendel, of Lock Haven, Donna Christianson, of Troxelville, and Tina Chappell, of Florida; 28 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by three grandchildren, David, Jasmine and Elise.
    Funeral services were held Sat., Aug. 28,  at Revival Tabernacle, 960 Susquehanna Trail, Watsontown. Pastor Timothy Gingrich, of Sound Truth Ministries, officiated.
    Funeral arrangements were by the Roupp Funeral Home Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road, Mifflinburg.

Jean Milroy Aimetti
    Jean Milroy Aimetti, 82, of 412 Ruhl Lane, Mifflinburg and a resident of Tucson, Ariz., during the winter months, went to share in the glory of the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at her home in Mifflinburg.
    She was born March 15, 1928, in Mountain Top, a daughter of the late Lyman D. and Crystal (Kirkhuff) Milroy. On Oct. 3, 1948, in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lewisburg, she married John H. Aimetti, who preceded her in death in February 2007.
    Jean was a 1945 graduate of Milton High School.
    She was employed at Lewisburg Builders in bookkeeping for more than 10 years. Jean also was self-employed in accounting and bookkeeping.
    Jean was a member of West End Bible Fellowship, Millmont, and the Vista De Le Montana United Methodist Church, Tucson. She was a Sunday school teacher at the Lincoln Chapel United Methodist Church, Laurelton, for many years and was active in church prayer groups.
    Surviving are six daughters and sons-in-law, Crystal and Gordon Christensen, of Yuma, Ariz., Zoe and David Oldt, of Mifflinburg, Elizabeth and Ted Williams, of Selinsgrove, Jeanie and Rudy Lyons, of Weikert, Jo Helen and Michael Gasky and Jacque and David DiPalermo, all of Tucson; one brother, Lyman Milroy, of South Williamsport; one sister, Shirley Bergen, of Lewisburg; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by one brother, Veryl Milroy.
    A memorial service to celebrate Jean’s life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, in West End Bible Fellowship, 19200 Old Turnpike Road, Millmont, with Pastor Richard L. DeVett officiating.
    Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to either the Wycliffe Bible Translators, P.O. Box 628200, Orlando, FL 32862-8200, or the Smile Train, P.O. Box 96231, Washington, DC 20090-6231.

Paul R. “Dick” Krous
    Paul R. “Dick” Krous, 84, of 226 Zechman Lane, Laurelton and formerly of 1317 Fremont St., Lancaster, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at Rolling Hills Manor Nursing Home, Millmont, after visiting with his son, Ron.
    He was born in Lancaster County, a son of the late William Everett and Kathryn L. (Reddig) Krous.  Though divorced, the late Ruth G. “Ruby” Hamilton Krous, who died in 2008, remained very good friends with Dick.
    He served his country proudly with the Army during World War II.  
    Dick worked 24 years with the former Olmsted Air Force Base as a material handler, the former Watt and Shand, the former Harold’s Furniture Store, retiring from Sears and Roebuck where he worked in furniture repair.
    A former member of Memorial Presbyterian Church, Dick loved the outdoors and was a member of the Union County Sportsmen’s Club, and a member of the North American Hunting Club.  
    He loved hunting, fishing, and driving around the mountains to enjoy nature’s beauty. He was a fan of NASCAR, Penn State, had a gun collection, and collected string holders. Earlier he bowled and loved to do furniture repair work. Mostly, he and his son had an unconditional love for each other.
    He is survived by three children, Son, Ronald W., husband of Jill L. Krous, of Lancaster, stepdaughter, Brenda L., wife of Elmer L. Reikard, Delmar, Del.; stepdaughter, Connie L., wife of C. James Myers, of Willow Street; three grandchildren, Tabitha, Ronald II, and Valerie; four step-grandchildren, LuAnn, Jody, Vicky, and Dianne; five great-grandchildren, Lindy, Ashlyn, Charles Jr., Quentyn, and Kerstyn; and one brother, William E. “Buddy”, husband of Sandy Krous, of Williamsport.
    He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky J. Krous, and his former wife, Ruth G. “Ruby” Krous.  
    Relatives and friends were invited to attend Paul’s life celebration funeral service held Thurs., Aug. 27, at the funeral home of Fred F. Groff, Inc., 234 W. Orange St., Lancaster. The Rev. Donald G. Price officiaed.
    Interment was at Millersville Mennonite Cemetery.   
    Memorial contributions may be made in Dick’s memory to the Union County Sportsmen’s Club, Inc., 50 Sportsmen’s Club Lane, Millmont, PA 17845-9300.

John V. Guffey
    John V. Guffey, 84, formerly of Pine Valley Court, Mifflinburg, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg.
    Born Feb. 8, 1926, in Milton, he was the son of the late William and Katey (Neitz) Guffey. He was married to the former Ethel M. Heimbach, who preceded him in death in 2007.
    A veteran of World War II, he served as a leader of the 40mm anti-aircraft guns on the USS California until a “Zeke 52”, a Japanese kamikaze plane, crashed into the ship’s superstructure. Badly burned, Mr. Guffey spent 16 months in the National Naval Center, Bethesda, Md. He and his crewmates sank seven battleships, two destroyers, seven aircraft and bombarded six islands. He earned a Purple Heart, World War II medal and an Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as seaman second class.
    Mr. Guffey worked as a dispatcher for Beachel Taxi Service, Milton, and for Montgomery Mills.
    He is survived by six sisters and seven brothers-in-law, Helen and Russel Yordy of Dewart, George and Gladys Guffey of Lewisburg, Betty and Norman Fogelman of Milton, Sara and Bob Clow of St. Louis, Mo., Glenn Heimbach of Milton, Linda and James Lower of Lewisburg and Kay and John Tyson of Lewisburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by six brothers, Woods, Arthur, Ralph, Clarence, Luther and Earl; and a sister, Margaret.
    Friends and relatives will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Thurs., Sept. 2, at the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milton, with the funeral following at 11. Officiating will be the Rev. Daniel H. Hicks. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
